Ive just bought a Samsung Note 10.1 (2013 edition), after always saying how pointless tablets are  Got to say im enjoying it, but dont know if its just because its new or not....

Its the first time Ive used a tablet, and Android, so have a few queries.....

- Can you update Android to the latest edition for free, or do you have to pay? And should the tablet auto update?

- Should I need to periodically plug it in to my pc like my iphone for updates etc?

- I've downloaded uTorrent for it, but how do you get downloads to automatically save to the sd card rather than the tablet itself? Also, I've not downloaded anything yet, so do I need to do anything special downloading them, or is there something special I need to do? Where is the best place to download?

- Do I need to download anti-virus?

- The tablet came installed with Samsung Apps and Google Play Apps. Ive been using Google Apps over Samsung Apps, as I see it, if I ever change devices I should keep the paid apps from Google?

Google Play apps seems to be the obvious choice to me, I've never used the Samsung ones as they Google Play covers any Android device.

Upgrading is free but seems to be device dependant, e.g. my Galaxy Ace 2 is supposed to have support for ICS but I still don't have an upgrade option available using their software. I'd say its worth installing Kies or whatever the Note equivalent is and connecting it up to the PC just to make sure there isn't any firmware updates, etc available.

I shouldn't think you'd need an antivirus unless you're downloading dodgy stuff routinely, I expect AV on a phone/tablet will slow it down massively.

I've no idea on torrents on tablets either, never tried

i may sound like a luddite, but i convinced the missus to get an iPad, and after about a day, i ended up going back to my Macbook. I don't know why exactly, but little things like not having a keyboard, and not having a desktop make a difference.... it's weird. it's just as good to look at the screen, but i don't feel like you have as much control with a tablet. 

i no longer use it at all.

i done the opposite.
bought a macbook air when I already had an ipad. dont use the macbook air at all.
ive just bought a new ipad air n all.

Been several cases of malicious executables making it onto the Google Play Store. I run avast free. Does the job nicely, doesn't noticeably affect performance on modern tablets/phones from my pov.

They are essentially tiny computers Treat it as such.

Updates to OS depends on the model of tablet. For instance my mum's Scroll Excel is running 2.3.2 and thats the latest available for it, her HP Slate is running ICS with no scheduled updates.

My Moto G runs Jelly Bean with a guaranteed OTA upgrade to Kit Kat in 2014, but after that point who knows.

Granted these also depend on the modding scene for your tablet. The samsung note 10.1 is going to have a massive modding scene so I wouldn't fear, get your arse on xda-developers and check out your options.
