Just got one delivered today and its fantastic !!
I know Apple had a load of hype around the iphone and ipod touch but ive never used another mobile device that is so easy to use.
Not much point to this post but Im really happy with it :-)
im after one of the classic 160s, but the sq is down on all the new ones because they dont use the wolfson chips!
I hope they hurry up and increase the storage capacity of them. Really nice but I just couldnt survive with that little storage on something that can do video.
Beautiful product tho - jealous :D
Nothing really compares to an ipod, 80% of new cars have ipod connectors, the ui is intuitive, and who else makes an mp3 player with similar capacities?
My gen3 has proven its ruggedness, its gotten wet, used and abused, Been blustered about on a motorbike at 100mph+, something my archos continually cried about, its also been dropped and bounced around in the hard sporting suspension. id have another in a heartbeat.
Rumour mill is the next gen ones of phone and ipod will have intel chips in them for a bit more juice< probably looking to push more applications on those ones although hacked iphones have all sorts of things, saw a video of one that had a game called "taptap" which was guitar hero for your iphone which was cool
Qualcomm are saying they are using the same tech behing the xbox360 gpu in its next gen mobile chips.
With any luck Apple will sort out streaming music from itunes to the ipod over wifi.
Combine that with the video out dock and the apple remote and you have a great living room media player.
This is far from when I used my car radio/tape player as my living room stereo as well (slidemount) but I figured that I very seldom were in my car and the livingroom at the same time :)

I dont think Qualcomm are supplying any of the graphics for Apples embedded systems and if they were Apple wouldnt allow them to publish it. Its a standard condition of doing business with Apple - anyone who claims they are producing a part of an Apple product (even a component of one chip) is either not telling the truth or about to lose the contract.

archos, and for a LOT longer than apple. 20GB players are about 2.5 inches square, with a 1.8 oled screen.
Archos is crap though. My turd can store 20gb, but batterylife is sh*t.
Wheres archos 160gb model, wheres their connector that surrenders all control to the car stereo, and where is the nice ui or even the eye candy?
i also didnt mean qualcomm were making chips for apple, its the unified shader tech from ati/amd that will be appearing in some nextgen phones
ehh, have you seen archos gear since 1996 ?
They have loads of 160GB models. They also have 250GB models.
Its about 3 years ahead of that tripe apple put out.
Gen 4 stuff (Gen 5 is current) are still way ahead.
Wheres your ipods wifi, 7 inch 800x480 touch screen, tv tuner, ethernet LAN connection or media server???
Heres a mid range model (Look at the persons spider fingers thats using it!)

Dont exactly fit in your pocket though does it

Ditto
Im having to change it now simply becuase its finally on its way out after 3 years. It over heats, the battery is terrible (now) and most importantly......I cant fit enough music on it. :D
Ipod Classic here I come.
Impressive product that archos.
But when it comes to being a music player it is still hardly first choice now lets face it. Hardly intuitive or in your pocket.
Im crossing my fingers for an iphone (or a touch if not). Im hoping to get my zune fixed too (which will be music for my car).
21st birthday 3 days after iphone release, and parents said they wanna treat me (my brother got laser eye surgery, i had the offer of that or the cash equivelent - although I bought a car a few years ago, I still have like 400 left). So I might treat myself.
If I get one though im deffo getting it insured, I dont like the idea of the glass screen breaking.
Just had the Touch demod to me by a mate and had a quick play. Have to admit Im very impressed. Sleek, quick and great video quality.
Not sure if I could live with less than 32Gb though.

They run of flash rather then a hardrive now in the new ones so it is limited to how they are
Should have included SDHC support and just create some slots that can store SD cards down the side of it or something.

I realise that, Im just saying Ill probably wait until the next gen when theyll bump the 16 upto 32 probably.
I would imagine a 32gb one will be out by christmas.
Still needs more space...
The only true rival there was to the iPod was the iRiver, I dont know how recent models compare these days though.
I still cant find myself taken in by all the hype of Apple products though. Maybe Im not cool enough
aaah, Archos. I still have one of these badboy bricks running rockbox software somewhere.

They have dozens of other products - some are music only, some music & video, some are media servers, pmas etc etc
Their smallest of the last generation (Gen 4, current is gen 5) of music & video players is 2.5 inches square, with a 1.8 screen, and its 20GB.

Some of the portable video players are around the same size as the biggest ipod.

They were the best in their day - nothing else did recording straight to mp3.
Getting on for 7 years old now that one
looks a bit posher than my old one
