Hi everyone, the names neil and would just like to say thanks to all, ive been looking for info for a new upgrade project and found loads of info and some answers I needed, brilliant . and im sure I,ll be asking some more questions as I go along. I will be doing a post on the full job but getting other jobs/questions out of the way 1st before the build...that hopefully will go ahead in about 4 to 5 wks

Im new to the forums and this is my 1st post so here I go.

Over the last few wks ive been putting  the kit together and some question have arisen. Im dealing with the EK FC3870 block in this instance going on a pair of sapphire HD 3870 cards.  ....it got me thinking about lapping the 3870 blocks. Ive decided that lapping is what will happen to the cpu after I decide which one to get but I decided to see if it was needed on the ek blocks. The question is can it be done, has anyone done it?  those who have this block will have noticed that the ram sinks are higher than the processor on the card and it seems a little tricky because of that reason. Anyone got any links to how to do it.

Basic info that may determine the reply .

Don't think I,ll be over clocking them ( crossfire setup ) .PC will be used mainly for photo/video editing and mild gaming on the 40" HD lcd. Also viewing HD films maybe.

Questions
1.. Do I need to lap the graphics cards blocks
2..any tutorials advice etc in removing the fan/top on the cards

hope it isn't too drawn out this post...but hey..im a nubee and thanks for reading

Why void your warranty if youre not going to bother overclocking.

Welcome to the forums!

You posted in General Discussion instead of General Hardware, Ill move the thread across for you.

Ive not lapped a block in a long time and then only CPU blocks. The reality I personally think is that the performance difference is going to be very minimal. Lapping is only something I would really consider if temperatures were borderline for too hot given my current setup. The machining quality of most blocks should be of a good enough standard these days provided you are using something such as Arctic Silver.

woo old school tech questions, how Ive missed them! :)

Welcome to the forums. I think I agree with Maldonado, there wouldnt be much point in it unless you were pushing everything as much as possible and wanted that little bit more, if you are keeping standard there shouldnt be much point.

But do what you choose to (might be just something you want to do!), sorry but its been soooooo long since Ive done anything like this I cant really offer any extra advice :(

yeah... if you want to do it then go for it....

but most blocks come with a mirror finish now anyway... lapping was really for years back when the quality of new, off the shelf blocks wasnt so great :o

I forget which number they live it, but its on the corner overlooking some new development on the grounds of what i think used to be a church, on the left as you go up the hill. Also, my cousin lives just off there - Richard Trimble.

hiya mal...hey soz for not getting back...work etc etc. i can take a guess at the area you mean...at the bottom of the hill row of terraced houses nxt to the chemist....and yeh the around that place i think was a church a while ago....anyhow... the name does sound vaguely familiar,im more likely to recognise a face more than a name lol.

just a bit of an up date to this project...been doin a bit of buyin etc>>>

lian li V2100+
Asus Maximus Formula Intel X38
QX6850
DTEK FUSION block
2x thermochill 360s
2x ek 3870s
2x sapphire hd3870
D5 vario pump...may get another n do dual loop....dunno yet.
Zalman ZM-MFC2 Multi Fan Controller.

i havnt made my mind up re the fans yet but they gotta be quiet ones...ive also got a few ideas re stacking the 360s inside and makin some kind of unit thats sealed from the rest of the case so get outside air goin thru rads... that will use(possibly 3 only) fans 3 x blowing through and 3 pulling through mounted sideways with cutouts both side of panels...1 for intake and 1 for outlet. im just not sure the push me pull you idea will work or just 3 blowing through(downwards thru bottom) will be enough.

i,ll post these questions after i get back from my hols... goin sharm el shiek on sun...thanks again....catch yeh later....cheers....neil

For the original question : yes it can be done. Is it worth it? No.

robbowigster

hi giant, yeh i got that answer a while ago...ive got that idea out my head now..no prob...cheers anyway.

hiya to you rivkid...just responding to a reply given by a fellow forum user who was being polite...likewise was i. didnt realise sayin hi etc wasnt techy enough.

cheers for the replys guys...any thoughts on the push me pull you with the fans idea?

cheers....neil

Can you do us a little diagram in paint of what the airflow will be? Im a little confused by your description.

As a general rule of thumb positive pressure is better.

robbowigster

hi,thanks for gettin back....i think the best way to make the idea easy to understand is>>> if you can imagine a piece of pipe(or some sort of cowling/shroud that could be modded) the same size as the outer dimensions as the rad, a fan at one end pushing air...a radiator or 2 in my case the thermochill 360s in the middle, stacked & sealed for better words to the inside of the pipe..so all the air thats pushed through goes through the fins only.....then a fan pulling( if needed).

if it was goin to kool the system enough with 3 fans i was thinkin...stack it facin down to the bottom(holes cut in to take the 2 x 360s) or if it needed the 6 fans to keep it kool...think ive sussed how to keep the width with the size of the 2100+. i was wondering more about the fans issue more because its pointless goin any further with this idea if the fans etc was a prob

question....will i need 3 or 6 to kool the system using 2 x360s

the plus side to this is i work for a company that has a decent set of lads in the maintenance dept...that will help puttin this rad thing together...ive just got to make up my mind re...will it wont it.

thanks for getting back...i may be able to post a reply later...just getting mi diving gear ready is all......thanks guys.....neil
