Im after something cheap to take my work with me when Im away for periods, so far this seems the best spec Ive found for the money: http://www.acernotebooks.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_5003WMLi_LX.A5105.670/version-1.asp

Anyone got any other good recommendations? The cheaper the better, although anything Ive seen at a lower price than that uses VIA C3s or 1.2 Celerys, not worth the outlay IMO, but if you know of a bargain, then great.

Aria have some Dell 1.6 Pentium Mobiles in for less than that.   They even have some 2.4 P4s for under Ã,£250, but they only have a 30 day warrantly.  I wouldnt touch those.  The C3s are actually not too shabby if you are only going to type up a few letters, check your mails and browse the net.

edit : Also for Ã,£30 more you can get something with a larger HDD, more RAM and more Horsepower from Comet.  Warranty is direct with Acer, and its excellent to say the least.

Do you need the horsepower of something brand new? Here you can often get really solid "remanufactured" 3-4 y/o Dell and IBM corporate jobbies for $300. Granted, theyll usually need a wifi card, but theyre built like brick sh*thouses.

Acer is a good value, only mark against it is the lack of a trackpoint, imho.

Ill be doing web development stuff. basic textpad coding and some Photoshop work with large PSDs, from 5-10Mb, so processor speed isnt vitally important, but I dont want to be getting impatient with it. If its low RAM I can upgrade it cheap/easily enough.

Ã,£30 more, twice the RAM, an extra 20Gb, and its an ML-34 rather than a 32.

Thats what I was thinking. A slower processor with 512+ memory is cheaper, and often runs cooler and longer on a charge.

With lappies, the security of buying new is certainly a consideration, though.

Yeah, although it seems I may be due one from family soon as a late birthday/early christmas gift, but its a big maybe. Good to keep my options open!

Im currently drooling over this - and very tempted to just sell off my main box and use this lappy connected to my monitor/KB/mouse occasionally - am spending less and less time on my PC because I dont like being holed up in my room - but theres still lots of stuff I wanna do online...

If you can bear a refurb Dell, this is a very good value site!

If you dont use games then it doesnt matter if you have a desktop or a lappy but if you use some of the modern ones then its better to have both than just the lappy.

With a lappy the weight and battery life can mean more than its capability if its going to be carried around.

[random]My perfect lappie would have a 88 long-throw Compaq keyboard that was angled for comfort.  Who cares if its 10cm thick? [/random]

Thats indeed a great pooter. I reluctantly bought a Dell Latitude when looking for an IBM, and was I surprised, the corporate stuff is mucho macho. Viva La Latitude. :ptu:
