Title: Local User Passwords & Data Loss
Post by: Pete on October 12, 2006, 03:14:26 AM
If a user forgets the pw for a local XP account and then a local admin goes in and resets it does that mean encrypted stuff the user had is lost forever? i.e. is there no way to reset the password and retain the encrypted stuff?

You can right click on the folder you want, if youre logged in as admin, and go to some menu option along the lines of give me unencrypted access for I am admin

Depends if the admin backed up the EFS certificates so that you can import them if anything naffs up.

I lost access to my data the same way. Reinstalled windows which changed all the Sids despite the user and pass being the same, the damage was done. Not even AEFS Recovery could get the things. :( Now I always back up my EFS certs (cant recall the run command to get the dialog off of the top of my head but google it).
