if you are having trouble with your light theory. i do believe i can reccomend some good reading for those, who dont have lectures on this subject.

this site deals with shaders, light placement, shadows and goes about explaining what does what in terms of theory wise, so you can apply it to any 3d program.

a good read if you are fiddling about with 3ds max and all you get is hairy boxes.
