Must do if they want you to buy a new operating system if you feel you need to upgrade :/

So you install pc and it dont run, you take it off buy bew bits, install it again and they wont let you

MS you are stupid :)

Interesting, apparently when Vista finds out its not a genuine copy it prevents access to everything except IE, and that can only be run for an hour! Just enough time to buy a proper licence I guess  8)

This is just playing into pirates hands. Theyre creating a sympathy angle for the pirates by making life so difficult for the honest joe. Who honestly is going to critise people with copied versions of Vista if you need to buy a new opne every time you upgrade your system? Shame because the people it punishes the most are the people who are always tinkering and upgrading - and these are the people most likely NOT to have pirate versions.

hmm, time to brush up on my knowledge of Ubuntu and rebrush Fedora.

if it was Ã,£10 a pop it wouldnt be so bad, but if they are going to charge full rate for it then i can see some serious sh*t going towards MS.  Another class action lawsuit?

For some users that effectively limites them to maybe a years use.

Thats appalling, I seriosuly doubt Intel or AMD will stand for this for very long. As soon as they see their sales dip becuase users refuse to take up new hardware due to limited use licences on Vista. Otherwise Ill just stick with XP thanks.....

Its the clearcut behavior of a monopolist. Disgusting. Id pay $30 for a boxed  OS or even a bit more if it came with manuals. Done that with Suse. Worth every cent. No OS w/o support that you install yourself is worth $200 or whatever MS will price the consumer version at.

This is why I walked away from MS years ago. Theyre evil. Mosquito nets and foot massages for half of Africa cant distract from disgusting business practices. Its a shame, as their products arent half bad. Its the licensing that makes me wanna hurl. :puke:

QuoteThe potential consequences are more dire for Vista users who ignore SPPs validation requests or fail its test.

XP users who dont pass the WGA test are blocked from downloading software add-ons such as the Windows Defender security tools. In contrast, users who decline or fail to validate their copies of Windows Vista via SPP will be blocked from using some of the operating systems features, Hartje said. That includes Aero, Vistas graphical user interface, and ReadyBoost, an application that uses flash memory to increase system performance.

After 30 days, the operating system will go into what Kay described as an "ugly mode" that provides reduced functionality, similar to Windows Safe Mode. Users then will be given one final hour of web access as a last chance to validate the software or buy a legitimate licence.

Vista aint got enough going for it to justify any of that - I cant see it flying off the shelves.

I doubt boxed XP even sells that much, its the preinstalls that will make up the bulk. Hardware makers will have no choice.

Some of my customers are using less than 100% legit copies of office. I use OpenOffice myself, and advise my customers to as well. Noone wants to pay 130 quid for something that will allow them to write a letter to the bank once in a blue moon.

MS, whilst making very good products, do rather thnk that they are above certain things. If they punt out the basic Vista for over 20 quid it could prove difficult to shift and most people will be sticking with XP... I know I will.

I really cant understand MS preventing peple from upgrading. I mean, the worst thing is the hardware requirements that vista demands.... not to run well, but to run at all! Not many people here wouldnt need to tinker to get it to run but the average joe might.

Cheers

MS Want your money and do not want you to pirate then

I think they realised the regular pc up graders and modders out there (us)
Would turn to pirate copies due to re-installs

Firstly they allowed 1 re-install, now though you can install it as much as you like.

Good

Vista doesnt look tempting at all... I will be sticking with XP on my main rig and on my new rig just have duel running XP32bit and XP64bit. But everything else in my house runs Slackware 11....

well put Serious, like you I will be running XP into the ground. Im hoping that by the time XP is unviable desktop Linux will be so well supported that I wont have to take much if any hit in the 3rd party software department when I finally remove M$ Windows from my machine for the last time.

Ã,
All this talk of new copies each time you change hardware is all scare-mongering.

Remember the ill-informed hype before the release of XP?

...same thing.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/11/03/ms_vista_climb-down/

"Our intention behind the original terms was genuinely geared toward combating piracy; however, itââ,¬â,,¢s become clear to us that those original terms were perceived as adversely affecting an important group of customers: PC and hardware enthusiasts," White writes. "You who comprise the enthusiast market are vital to us for several reasons, not least of all because of the support youââ,¬â,,¢ve provided us throughout the development of Windows Vista. We respect the time and expense you go to in customizing, building and rebuilding your hardware and we heard you that the previous terms were seen as an impediment to that - itââ,¬â,,¢s for that reason weââ,¬â,,¢ve made this change."

Awww.... bless
