Title: Mixed ram timings and voltages
Post by: zpyder on May 25, 2008, 12:12:23 PM
Hi all, bit of a conundrum here.

Back when I first built this computer 18 months ago I was using a P5B mobo with 2x 1gb OCZ Gold DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400. (Timings 5-5-5-12 @ 2.0v)

I had problems when doing intensive stuff on my comp (games etc) with it locking up etc. After ruling everything out I discovered that it was the mobo not setting the timings and voltage correctly, and that the computer/ram was much more stable at 2.1v too

Since then, I have replaced the mobo with a P5KC mobo, and also have added 2x 1gb OCZ Platinum DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 (4-4-4-15 @ 2.1v)

I thought all was fine until playing AoC and it seems now to be doing the random freezes and crashes.

I was wondering if any of you guys could recommend what timings and voltage I should set the ram to? Ive read in a few places that some ram might be better at 2.2v if using 4 sticks, but I dont want to frazzle anything (Im a noob ok?!)

I would try Timings 5-5-5-15 @ 2.1v, 2.2v will be ok to try if 2.1v doesn't do the trick.

I have noticed AoC is quite intensive on my comp my CPU and graphics card get hotter than with any other game I have currently installed, so don't rule heat out, get http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php and leaving it running in the background while playing.

It seems fine now. I *think* i have the ram on 2.0v and the timings above, but am not sure whether its that or some graphics tweaks I tried!

you should run some mem tests or cpu burn in tests to stress the system a bit and see what happens ;)
