Title: Movies You have to watch more than once to understand
Post by: neXus on September 04, 2006, 11:38:46 AM
As title, what movies did you have no chance of getting the first time around and had to watch 2, 3, 4 more times to fully grasp what is going on?

Ill start off with some

2001: A Space Odyssey: Well I mean they had to make the other movie to try and tell people what it was about ^^
A Clockwork Orange: Your not ment to understand it all I think since it is about drugs and nutters
X-men 3: I mean what the hell
K-Pax: They made a story and just didnt answer anything from it :/
donnie darko: Good Film and Its good to watch it to understand it properly but it takes a few viewings.

That One I gave up and did not even finish watching I was that lost, nearly as bad as the X-files latter series, blink and you had no clue what was going on for 5 episodes

Sometimes youre not supposed to grasp whats going on.  ;)  If Mullholland Drive made you scratch your head a bit try Eraserhead.

Not really convinced Clockwork Orange falls into this category.

Memento definitely needs more than one watch though.

I suppose your right, you could expand the thread to be in 3 forms

1. Was the film just so complicated you need to watch it again to follow it correctly.

2. Was the film made for you to have to watch it again?

3. Was the film ment to be understood?

Suppose the thing about Clockwork Orange is that its linguisitically a bit wacky but on one level at least the plot is relatively straight-forward.

Whats confusing on memento? I thought it was quite clear that the cop hadnt killed his wife, but Guy Pearce had realised this (at the start, which is the end) and so set himself false clues in order to kill him as revenge for the cop using him to do his dirty work.

Clockwork Orange was just worth the watch again, not to work it out or anything just worth a good few watchs :)

K-Pax is one of those films thats just open to interpretation anyhow, I think he probably was an alien, not a nutter... :)

Although you get the basics the first time you need to watch bladerunner several times to pick up all the issues in there.

Monty Pithons the meaning of life? I still havent worked it out and dont want to either. Was nearly bored to death after watching it the first time...

Meaning of Life: easy
Fight Club: just pay attention
Mulholland drive: Just treat it as a noir mood piece and walk away slowly.

Nah, only really the second/third with all the pseudo-philosphic and quasi-existentialist, theologically underpinned bullshine.

Brazil: the real version not the namby pamby yank fodder.

Itchi The Killer: In fact most Jap films have the odd moment that makes me go WTF?

The Muppets Christmas Carol.

Nah just joking about the last one.

lol there is no way you saw the subliminal stuff throughout the film the first time you watched it.  You only see them the second time you watch it.  The third watch you know to look for them and why theyre there.

Fight Club is a different film the first 3 times you watch it.  There are 3 distinct storylines you cannot see until youve watched it through each time.  Its actually the whole point of the film and was written 3 times so each storyline lead into the start of the subsequent watch.

Id love to say what they are in detail but theyd ruin the film for anyone whos not actually seen it or watched it 3 times.  1st watch work out the twist.  Second notice the subliminal images and the appearance of other characters far before they appear in the story as he thinks about different things.  Third seeing the cigarette burns for scene changes and the role of the female character.

Just about all the others listed here are a case of paying attention tho.  Memento being the most borderline just cause of the sequencing.

Donnie Darko for me too. Just not really sure what it was about and even why I bothered watching it.

Cheers
