It doesnt show in the event log unless the developer specifically writes code in the .dll to do so upon registration; which never happens.

Since Win2k the OS file protection service should prevent core windows .dll files from being over written, it might be worth investigating whether this service is enabled or not. The WFP does write to the event log if it prevents a DLL from being installed.

Finally, you might be able to work out which application has done the dirty by looking through the Uninstall registry list (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall). Some (not all) of the entries will have an InstallDate. This might help figure out which packages were installed most recently.

Thanks for the reply, looks like its going to down to someone replying to e-mail and owning up to doing it (lol chance of that happening?!)

Its a group of Alpha/Oracle .dll files that sit in System32, the box is used for testing perposes. I updated them to the latest version, testing was done, went live with big big problems becuase somewhere inbetween testing and live someone stuck old version of the .dlls on the server and registered them :(

Ouch :/

you sure that the live server didnt reject to updating the older versions to newer ones ?

Leon

Nah Im looking on the test box and they are definatly the old versions on there now, there is even the .old files which were the old ones I renamed sitting there.

Ah well looks like nothing we can do but start again, good job all I have to do is reapply the new ones to the test system and then hand it over.
