A mate of mine asked me to have a look at his home pc as his internet connection seems to be messed up.

Now his router is working fine (he has a second which we have also tested).  Now the problem we have is the ethernet adapter does not get an IP address from the DHCP server.  The connection says limited or no connectivity.  If you plug in via USB it adds another network connection, but again says limited or no connectivity.  I have checked the network adapter settings but everything looks okay (all set to DHCP and auto).  He has previously had some firewall software intalled but that has been removed.  He has also since had some registry cleaning software installed which he has run but it crashed mis way through which he believes is when the loss of connectivity started.  That software is no longer installed and he cannot remember the name of it neither.  Also disabling and uninstalling both virus software and also Windows Firewall has made no difference.  Basically, a reinstall is what I am thinking as I am at a loss.  Any other suggestions before I wipe machine on saturday?

Sorry forgot to say, I have also tried both routers and done hard resets on them.  I have also tried from a cmd line to ipconfig /renew etc ... just cannot retrieve an IP address.

Thanks for reading and for any help recieved. :)

Well I tried setting it to 192.168.0.2 (was not sure if the router was set to .1) and it accepted the static IP - but it just would not see the internet connection at all?  The limited or no connectivity has disappeared but no joy. IE was set to automatically detect settings in the LAN options.  He has a BT line with Plus Net connection.  I cannot type in a local address for the config page of the router; it does not find it.

Any other suggestions?

remove and re-install the network adaptor

Thanks for your replies.  And also for that little tool (it looks pretty good).

Will let you know how I get on.  I have a feeling a reinstall will be required.

The network adapter is installed correctly, as the connection does not work on USB either so it would appear to be a network protocol issue of sorts.  Pinging also did not work.

yes, it probably is a protocol issue, which is why i told you to uninstall and reinstall it!
