His PC (built by me):
C2D 1.8ghz
1gb pc533
7300LE PCI-E
300GB SATA I
Asrock motherboard.
XP SP2
My PC:
C2D 2ghz
2gb pc533
6600gt
2x 320gb SATA II
Asrock motherboard.
XP SP2
Sandra and 3dmark says my system is faster, but it takes ages to load my profile and it definitely feels a bit slower.
Only difference is my profile is ~50gb and Ive got a few more programs installed. Also my hdds have suddenly switched to SATA I mode (I think) bandwidth has dropped to 149 from just under 300mb/s.
And my gfx card is knackered, its flickering lines across the screen in games now :/
:/ whine..
My DVDRW broke too :(
ahh, the joys of a fresh install.
start/run/msconfig
services tab / hide all microsoft services / disable all
startup / dissable all
good as new ! (almost!)
SDP, are ASRock motherboards any good now? i havent used one for a couple of years and just wondering what there like performance wise and reliability?
LiAM
I personally dont like them, they have missed an S from the title (Assrock)
Stick with a proper brand. Never scrimp on the motherboard.

Thought ASUS sold them off a while ago back in the socket A era?
They may be Asus budget line, but you should have seen the stacks of them in the Tekheads return room...
I wouldnt buy one. Motherboards are worth spending the extra on as the backbone of the computer tbh.
I know they are asus budget brand, but they are as bad as ECS boards.
At least with PC Chips/ECS boards theres only ever 2 states, Working or DOA. Asrocks have niggling problems.

lol tell me about it but the reason i wasnt so sure about ASRock boards is that we use them in our new PCs in the school i work for, there part of C2D machines and they run pretty well but the only moan i have with them is that the drivers for the boards are really crap, sooo un-reliable and causes windows to be unstable at times.
Ive had no such problems (my mates pc was back here for a hdd swap). I got them cos they have agp and pci-e slots.
+ AGP & PCI-E slots
+ Onboard audio is really good
+ Reliable
+ Easy to clock
+ Easy drivers
+ passive nb cooler
+ DDR & DDRII slots
+ Dirt cheap
- No cpu voltage adustment
- FSB tops out at 300 iirc, but thats plenty
- The cpu fan speed control thing was disabled in a BIOS update.
- Their website is sh*t
fwiw Id happily put a pcchips or ECS board in a budget stock-speed box. I got a pcchips one (£26 new) downstairs thats been going 3yrs or so without problems or reinstalls. They work and theres no settings in the BIOS that n00bs can change and end up braking it.
I bet half the rmas of cheap stuff is cos its the n00b sector, idiots arent going to pay £120 for a board when they can get "the exact same thing" for £30. Then the idiots plug in the 4pin 12v upsidedown or they wonder why it wont work with a 250w psu etc.
