My modded WRT54GS with DD-WRT has just decided that after over a year of faithful service it would become a paper weight!

The Power light flashes and the hub light remain on, I have tried various "fixes" even putting it in the freezer! But its properly dead!

Can someone sugest a replacement as the my old netgear WGR614 that is its temporary replacement keeps crapping out as there is too much traffic to handle.

I want something that can handle the load, works with cable, and should include wireless, but I would contemplate a seperate wireless gateway.

My budget is about £50 so sorry no Draytek Vigor :(

Cheers for you advice.

Mark

have you tried paperclipping it

Worked once for me on a WRTG

Mark

Buy a second hand proper router (A cisco) off ebay

or buy a cheap cisco (800 series) and a WAP

XEntity

Yep tried everything, nothing happend :(

Ideally I want something with web admin, does the cisco have webadmin? or is it all command line based?

I saw an old cisco at work, might give that a quick look to see if its got the right ports and not DSL. But not sure if it is still around.

depending on how much RAM it has you can run CRWS or security device manager - both web based

I can provide you with any version of IOS required...

If its cable a router is a router, just need to set the default route to be the port the cable modem is connected to

XEntity

I might consider that, What routers do other people use and how do you find them?

What are you opinions of Netgear / Linksys / Zytel / Belkin etc etc

Really I just want something that works really   -)

Cheers

Im using one of the SOHO6s plugged into my Speedtouch working in bridge mode.  Then i have a WAP plugged into that.  I got fed up of the speedtouch, as a modem it rocks, and a wireless router its bloody awful.

With a decent Access Point.  The Airport isnt a bad choice if you want to be able to network a HDD or Printer.

Very much annoyed now....

...At work today waiting for this auction to near an end, placed a good bid, then my work computer decided to freeze for about 20 seconds while outlook was recieving a mail from the exchange server! and my bid was too late!

Could have got it for a good price as well! Will have to keep an eye out for another Soho 6... but doubt there will be anotherone any time soon. :(

Not a happy bunny!

Ive got a WRT54G I was going to sell until I saw the Draytek Vigor 110, ADSL Modem Only.  No routing no nothing. Then I can use that on the WAN port of the WRT - DD Hacked.

Just get another WRT54GS, or whatever the new Linux hackable ones are called.

I can imaging.  Ive heard good things about the smallere Checkpoint appliances as well (I think Mark has good history with them too).  though to be fair right at this moment I would be escpaing Virgin as fast as my little legs can carry me.  The new restrictions are horrible beyond all things.

can anyone comment on the Firebox II Plus or the Firebox III 700?

Can I plug these directly in to my Cable Modem (Network Port) and connect to a hub on the other side to give me the extra ports?

And does it have a web interface? As I dont want to be playing around with learning the command line commands for it, to set everything up?

Oh and does it require any licences?... Basically if I buy one will it do everything that my WRT54GS did (other than wi-fi)

Thanks for your help and comments guys!

@Beaker - Which new restrictions are you talking about? the throttling? or is there something else now too? Also which smaller Checkpoint appliances?

After looking at the firebox II and III you need the original CD to be able to login and administer the box, so looks like that isnt an option as dont want to pay for their support.

Will have a look tomorrow for the Cisco, think there is an 800 series around, and if I cant claim it then another ebay purchase I think.....

Hi Mark,

Just been having a look at the 800 series, and noticed that the hub is 10MBits unless I go for a 87* (Which I dont think there are any around)

My concern here is not the network computers as I can use another hub but more the broadband, I should be being upgraded to 10Meg soon, which will take me to the peak of the routers capability, so I expect for 1 it wont be able to use the whole 10 meg and two if my BB gets upgraded then it wont handle higher than 10.

You mentioned a second hand "proper router" which model were you talking about here?

Or do you know of any other 800 series that support 10/100 i.e. ones thatll be on ebay :)

Thanks for all your help guys!
