Title: NasLite - turn an old PC into a nas drive
Post by: knighty on September 18, 2006, 00:26:22 AM
NasLite..... rocks :)

first piece of software Ive paid for in as long as I can remember !  (Ã,£16)

you can boot right from a CD drive or a usb memory stick, its only about 7 meg for the full thing, boots right into it and your setup and going in 5 min :)

(if you use the CD version like me you need a floppy disk in the drive to save config)

really nice, and really fast, mines running on a P3 1gig with a gig of ram - was my brothers old PC he decided he didnt want anymore (tho itll run on a P90 with 16meg quite happily)

600gig across 5 hard drives :)
(40gig, 80gig, 120gig, 160gig, 200gig)

supports up to 128 hard drives too :)

boots really quick, plus you can log into over the network/Internet and change all your settings, reboot the pc etc..

theres been a few posts about people wanting this sort of thing, so I thought Id go ahead and post about mine :)

edit: no thread is complet without a pic ;)

(in a cupbord out the way so its nice and quiet for me!)

Theres another one (think its the one that Mongoose uses) called FreeNas. Same idea, but totally free (though I think you can donte if you like).

Links to both:
NasLite (http://www.serverelements.com/)
FreeNas (http://www.freenas.org/)

I saw free nas and there was something that NasLite does that FreeNas doesent...  cant remember what, but it was something I needed :o

you can get the older version of NasLite for free, but it doesent support raid cards which I needed too

p.s. DOH! on the links, should have thought of that !

edit/p.s. I know its not really news worth, but I just built it in the middle of the night yesterday when I was bored from stuff I had lying around so Im pretty impressed with it :P

I was using Naslite until recently. I upgraded my Server to a new box and Naslite doesnt like K8M800 chipsets :(:(:( but yeah its very good. I tried Freenas as well and its pretty cool but feels less solid than Naslite.

Naslite is very basic, but it does what it says on the tin and does it well. I would watch the power supply to your NASlite box though, I had some trouble with file systems crapping out if the machine was incorrectly shutdown. The drives were still mountable in other OSs though so while annoying its not the end of the world.

is that the new V2 version ?

It just came out this month I think....the cd version anyway, think usb version was out a little longer and HD virsion is comming soon !

a quick look through the forums and it looks like the whole point of the new version is to support more stuff (including raid cards, woohoo!)

I read about the whole powerfailute thing too.... making drives non-bootable.... read a post that said when it looks like its frozen on the hard drive tests at boot-up just leave it going.. its fixing it but takes a while... I was given a suposidly nackered 160gig drive a while back.... thought I might as well give it a try... looked like it had frozen on boot-up... but then a few hours later when I checked it, it was working perfectly :)

It offers huge networked storage possibilitites at the price of being on 24/7 and using a proportionate amout of power.

Using an old PC is cheapest initially but may not be the best option for everyone.

I was using V1.5, but as far as I can make out at the time V2 was built there was no support in the official kernal for K8M800 sets with DMA mode hard drive access. Ive got it set up under an old copy of Windows NT4 now and for the time being cant be bothered to switch back.

My HDDs would fail to mount in the NASLite box even after leaving them for the 30mins to 1 hour that the "scandisk" thingy takes. It didnt happen every time, or to every drive, but when it did happen it was only recoverable by using another operating system (I used WinXP and an installable filesystem doobery for ext2 file systems).

Im Mongoose on the NASlite forums too though I dont post there anymore, if you need ideas on how to fix NASLite drives at any point I guess my old threads are still there somewhere.

So how easy is it to mirror disks on this OS then. FREENas is a turd tbh... bloody clever and freaking useful.

I *think* it suports some kind of security and user accounts.... but I havnt looked into it :o

tongy... I dont think it will mirror the disks for you :(

tho I think there was some sort of add-on program mentiond on the forum that will do it for you ? not sure about that one :o
