What I am looking to establish is whether I have got a faulty stick or not. This is what the machine is using.

The machine is brand new and fully working all of yesterday, the Motherboard is an Asus M2N-E and when the machine was turned on it gave me 1 long and 2 short beeps continuously.
Upon fiddling around I have found that one of the sticks will not boot the machine in any of the single channel configuration slots. The other one works fine. It will not boot with both, either way round.
Is it safe to say the memory is dodgy and should be relaced by ebuyer? Is it common for a stick to be faulty brand new, or am I just mr unlucky 1 in 1000 manufacturing fault?

id suggest running a memory check proggie, though i dont know if they always work... MEMTEST is one such utility.
Does sound like the RAM is a goner.
I have had one or two (literally) problems with ASUS motherboards and certain types of ram.
Not sure why it happens but it does, sometimes. I agree get a copy of memtest (there is one on the Ubuntu Server ISO btw).
Cheers

Its totally common to get a duff stick off the bat, in fact its better because sticks with intermittent errors can be the bane of your existence if not identified. Use memtest, its spot on. Youll need a floppy drive for it though.
OK, cheers, Ill get round to using memtest and post later, cheers guys.
At least Ive identifired the possible fault and the machine is working atm. :)
W00tage, problem soled. (Touch Wood) :D
Ive been doing some backround research on the motherboard to learn it is rather fussy with memory. I actually checked on the ASUS site for recommended memory before I chose this pair. I found it odd that a stick would suddenly die after 1 day.
Ive updated the BIOS and all is well, 1GB again, however I will run memtest at the weekend to make sure, Im not entirely convinced but rather happy now.
I was feeling a bit down about it really for a while, Ive built the complete machine for my brother, having worked perfectly after having built the machine from scratch in about 2 hours I was pretty pleased. What happens, the next day it causes problems. I want my bro to have a reliable mid range machine that isnt going to throw a fit every week, hes starting college soon.
