Title: New motherboard and its power connectors
Post by: Blade on November 04, 2006, 17:45:47 PM
Hi guys,

Sorry to be rude but could you please read this and give me facts not opinions as I am going crazy here. Thanks.

I have a new Enermax Liberty PSU and Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 motherboard, (for a Dual Core system).

The motherboard has a 24 pin socket and one 4 pin CPU socket.
The PSU has a 20 pin plug, the extra 4 pin plug, (to make 24 pins), plus two 4 pin CPU plugs one of which has 12V written on it which the manual says is the one to use when the CPU only requires one plug, as mine does.

Question: What power connections need to be made to drive the board?

Not having this type of board before I asked the shop who told me that all the 24 pins should be plugged in plus the CPU plug.

To keep this short... irrespective of what else I plug in, if I plug in the CPU plug the CPU fan wont spin.

If I do not plug the CPU power plug in spins perfectly.

(I have already had the mobo tested and told it was ok and I had the PSU changed today as they said that it was faulty and that would be why the CPU fan would not spin).

The manuals do not say EXACTLY what I should be expected to plug in, (though I believe the CPU plug should be used), so I am having doubts about what is the correct way to do it and therefore unsure as to whether it is a fault or not.

Im going mad here guys. Please help!

... and thanks again

Dave.

Does the system boot properly without the cpu plug in?

Two 4 pin connectors, does both of them fit in the 4-pin socket ?

sdp,

Im just trying to see the board and CPU fan power up before I fit it all into the case. Ive not tried booting it. Remember the shop says that all the connectors need to be used, but if I do that the CPU fan wont spin.

Bear,

No only one 4 pin plug can be used, (but I have tried both seperately of course you can not put both into the one CPU power socket).

I did not mean both at the same time just making sure the right one was plugged to the board.

If everything works without the 12v one I wouldnt worry.

edit does the 4 -pin to make 24 also fit ?

On my brothers there is the big connector and a second square x4 extension that joins onto it. There is also a separate square x4 connector. All three have to be connected for it to work. Its an Asustek 939 pin though... just downlaoading a manual.

From the manual you need both plugs inserted into the ATX and the third into the ATX_12V. You have to get them the right way around though!

Serious,

YES! That is what I thought and have been told. But if the CPU plug is in the board the CPU fan wont spin at all! If I take it out the CPU fan spins just fine... (I have tried 2 different fans, the retail one and an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro).

Just for clarification... The fan is plugged into the board seperately. It does not rely on the CPU plug for its power.

The 2 CPU plugs are required on some motherboards, not this one. The correct plug is in but I tried the other just in case.

If the plug is in the fan wont spin... period.

I think this guy has had the exact same problem as me... and it looks like he found the fault/reason.
