right

basically im a VM broadband customer (formerly telewest). I was on the 4mb service until the other week (when they kindly upgraded me to 10mb for free).

since then Ive not been able to reach anywhere near the 10mb transfer rate (still getting a max of about 4.5mbps).  after disconnecting my existing router (Linksys BEFSR41 http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1122062340941&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=4094131284B01) and linking up directly to the cable modem my speeds increased up to 9.5 Mbps.

Now i now the firmware on the router is pretty old but i have been unable to get it to flash it to a newer one (tried it)

I presume this router isnt up to the job and i need a new one?

If this is the case does anyone have any reccommendations for a new one? (bearing in mind the 10Mbps service is being upgraded to 20Mbps soon)

cheers

If you have and old PII or the like an old HDD and two 100Mbit NICs you can use IPCop
I am using it on an ADSL 24/2 line and am very pleased, I am also using SNORT which allready is integrated in the web interface. A low priced and safe solution to do firewall/routing/DHCP. (IF you connect more than one machine you will need a switch as well and if you do DMZ you will need a third Nic)

WRT-54G\GL\GT\GS etc etc

Good little router, though if you are getting 9.5Mb on your 10Mb line i would be surprised if you got as high as 17Mb when they do the upgrade.  Im happt enough with 2Mb TBH, there isnt any need fo ranythign faster at home.

cheers for the input so far

Im looking for a wired router tbh.

however i did note that the routers you linked to state their Mbps rating, i cant find a rating for the one I have already.

is another linksys one the way to go then?

madmax

any ADSL2+ router should handle the "upto 24Mbps" speeds,
use a netgear DG824 which has served me well

the cables routers will handle 100MBps or higher depending one what you want.  You might be better off getting something with wireless TBH.  PCWorld usually has the WRT-54G or similar in for £35ish, so its really not worth buying a solely wired router unless you have a complex wireless system already set up.

No need for Faster? Theres only so much Xbox 360/wii/gamecube/DVD/HD Content you can get on 2mb.

Im on 10mb & finding it slow :-(

I WANT MY STUFF NOW!

Come use my 512k connection and say that Im finding it slow apart again.

Thats odd...

Me, Nimrod, and now You have all complained of router issues since the VM changeover.

Crazy slow speeds for me, same for nimrod I think.

We have a WRT-54G here. QoS turned on causes the router to shove all traffic down to 512k speeds. Which shared between 4 people in a house is not enough.

Turn QoS off... works fine. Odd that it only happened from the changeover.

Except drivers that are 30mb sized standard nowerdays, podcasts of 50 - 80MB each, streamed content of any kind, oh and just the need to multitask. Lets not forget 1Gb sized game demos either.

Yup... no use for anything over 2mbit at all
