Talking of Arcades.  Why are they all so sh*te nowadays?

The last ones I saw have 1 or 2 games, usually old ones, and usually dont work properly.  The rest of the space is taken up by gamblers, 2p machines, fluffy toy "dispensers" etc.

:(

Valley Centretainment near me have what could be an awesome 4up Mario Kart game, but it doesnt work properly.  And as long as people keep pumping in pounds, they arent going to pay to repair it.

I agree, there used to be a quality arcade in my hometown of Hull with loads of multiplayer games. Now it may as well be a casino the amount of slot machines in there. From 80% arcade games to 20% games and 80% slot machines/coin-pushers.. Its a shame, but i think online gaming has killed the industry..

Ive always thought there would be a market for retro arcades, hire them out for corporate events and stuff. Real classic vintage chic, nice licensed bar on the premises, lots of neon lighting, no under 18s permitted, aimed at 20 somethings and 30 somethings who grew up playing the classics.

I like that idea... Why not go one step further and open a late night bar/arcade, with cheap as hell machines (10-20p credits) and pricey drinks (£2.85 a pint). Problem is you would need quite a large demographic and I cant see many women attending!

There used to be a place down portsmouth way, not sure if its still there, but it had vintage arcade machines...I mean vintage, they had to be converted to accept modern currency. That was always fun.

I can tell you now, it will be packed with emo/goth girls. I knew quite a few of them from my uni days and most of them were gamer girls. This kind of socialising/drinking/gaming place would appeal to them.

The only problem with that kind of place is the cleaning, alcohol makes a hell of a mess when it comes to floors, tables and in this case the arcade units. Would be nothing worse than sticky retro arcade machines.

Other than that it seems like a brilliant idea if you can keep it classy enough.

One hell of a thread  :ptu:

So many great games... and so so so many hours wasted.

"Within your 'purview'? Where do you think you are, some f**king regency costume drama? This is a government department, not some f**king Jane f**king Austen novel!"

I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Alas arcades arent really that viable nowadays without the money made from fruit and quiz (AWP/SWP) even in huge ones in places like Skeg you have about a 90% fruit 10% arcade mix, and even then the arcade is mostly dancing stage type stuff.

If you want to play arcade games either get MAME, or source a cab and do it properly   -)
