I need to password protect some directories on an XP box.
The box itself is sat in the DMZ on a Router, and not part of the Domain the rest of the connected PCs are on.
There are 12 field sales guys who use remote software to log in and update their daily sales info, as well as check their appointments and the like.
I cant change the nature of the network (I want them to just VPN in and connect a network drive but The Boss of the place doesnt like the idea).
so folks, any ideas? Im stuck with the XP box and im trying to get this to tick over.
Try and find Microsoft Private Folder 1.0, it was released for a short time before MS pulled it since IT security experts said it was too good for normal people to have.
Its going to be easier to encrypt the whole folders and allow remote access to them IMO. That will make files unreadable by anyone else unless they want to spend a disproportionate time trying to crack it.
Something like this? :dunno:

Disable simple file sharing and then set permissions?

thought of that, the machine isnt on the domain :(
MSPF 1.0 doesn;t help either, it appears to only encrypt the users My Documents folder, also we need to allow the sales admin dude to open up the folders and update the appointment. Looking like "Folder Crypto Password" is best bet at the moment. Does what it needs to, and isnt too difficult for the salesmen to use. I dont want to have to spend a week driving around the Uk installing clientside software as many things seem to want me to.
If you go to http://www.download.com and search for encryption you should get a load of other options too, its quite a common issue ;))
if its an Xp box... cant they each have there own user account on it..... which they can log into using the windows remote connection thing.... they just set "make users files private" or whatever the little tick box it is when you make the accounts ?
