It was one of those DL3TC JIUHB jobbies that will hit 2.2 GHz out of the box with no extra voltage.

Mongoose

I have a pair of those chips in my old Athy MP box, they rock, used to do 2200Mhz with no voltage boost.

Have you tried reseating CPU.Check it for damage. If the heatsink was nudged when the GFX card was added it could have chipped cpu or your getting bad contact.
Other than that it does sound like a trial & error swap to see whats borked.
Who the smeg is Dwayne Dibbley ?

good thinking bigsteve :)

It works at BIOS default and you say it act crazy when you try to change settings ? Have you tried just one change at the time to see if some work and some not ?

Well I ram a few memtests last night on the four sticks of RAM that have been floating round in and out of the rig and of three Twinmos 512s one pulled up over 800 errors, the other 3, the other none, so the two with errors have been chucked. But that said the system has been randomly crashing for a while so whether thats directly related or Ive just fixed a different problem I dont know.

Funnily enough swapping the RAM around seems to make it boot, and with the good sticks I can save to BIOS and ramp up the FSB to 200 and the processor to 2000Mhz with no problems and save it, however its still a bit hit and miss whether it comes on. Its not really been on and off enough to draw any conclusion though. Sometimes itll come on, boot fine, no problems, then other times the fans will spin up but no beep nor life and it has to be re-cycled five or six times to get it to power up properly. Im changing the CMOS battery now as a matter of cause then well run it as is for a few days to see how it goes. If it doesnt look like its helped then itll be a reseat the CPU job, and possibly check the power switch for faults as well.

Oh well, not the CMOS battery, and its hanging on boot with a clean new memory stick once you make any changes to the BIOS.

Guess Ill try the CPU tomorrow.

Check the BIOS for a halt on errors setting, change it to none - itll still be knackered but you wont have to press F1 each time. It sounds like the cpu doesnt like running that fast to me, but Id bet that the motherboard is knackered more than anything.

/This is what I was saying - waste days pissing around with it or chuck £50 at ebay and get it sorted - http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=motherboard+bundle
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Thanks for the advice by the way guys, thought Id bump this to let you know that a new mobo and CPU fixed the problem. The old CPU looked in tip top condition with no visible problems on the core so I imagine its the old mobo that is damaged. Ill stick the lot up on fleabay as a "sold as seen - not working but no time to test" job lot for £25 or so, Im sure someone will bid on it.

Shame really, that poor CPU has been running at 2.2 for years now with no problems.
