A few days ago my PC starting acting up where when I went to turn it on, it started up, fans a spinning and all, but the main power light was intermitantly flashing.  I turned it of, and tried again and that was that it booted.

Its been getting worse and now it wont boot at all.  Power And HDD Led are just stuck on.  Everything sounds ok but there is nothing on screen, no error message, no bios beeps.  The only thing that I can see it physically wrong inside is that my graphics card fan is not spinnning.

Motherboard is an Asus A8V, AMD 64 3500+ S939, Patriot 1GB 400 Ram, Geforce 4 Ti 4200 Tagan PSU.

Any ideas?  Im going to test the graphics card in another AGP machine when I get a chance to make sure its not that, its getting on a bit, the oldest part of the system.  But I dont think its that as Im not hearing the windows sound as usual on logon which suggests it is not booting at all.  Any ideas? Cheers.

Would a faulty graphics card in a AGP slot stop a machine from booting if the motherboard does not have on board graphics?

At least I know parts are cheap enough now for the standard of the machine.

Sounds like a PSU problem to me. A faulty graphics card would surely give beep errors from the BIOS.

Try taking the card out and booting, just to see if you get any beeps. Also try taking out anything else - PCI cards like network etc etc.

If the problem has been getting worse then a PSU that is struggling (due to not being able to provide enough juice) sounds at fault to me.

The PSU is pratically brand new......Okay maybe not, looking at my old tekheads account, Tagan 380W ATX 2.0 Silent 20 dBA PSU, Date Completed  16.May.2005

I will give that a try tommorow and try using my brothers PSU which has a bit more juice.  But I wouldnt have expected tagan to have early faults? :?

I see no reason for any of the other major components to be at fault, I have suffered no recent performance problems.

As usual the manufacturer support sites are of little use.

id say either its a dead CPU (only suspected because theres no bios beeps)

of the GFX card because the fan isnt spinning.... tho... maybe its a varible speed fan and needs to be past post before it starts going ? (bit of a stretch)

have you tried taking the gfx card out and booting like that ? you should at least get some bios beeps that way ?

Agreed. Whilst the graphics card itself might not draw much power, the rest might struggle on a 380.

Edit - If youve run the system (PSU specifically) 24/7 since May 2005, I would definately point towards that as the suspect component.

filbert

Dead graphics card,
It can give no beebs as the mobo sees it

Thanks for the replies guys, Ill have a look at PSU & GFX for time being.

I did try booting without the GFX but got not windows start sound suggesting it didnt boot.  But Ill try it in another machine when I get a chance to make sure.  Ill try a diffferent PSU as a I said tommorow.

knighty

did you used to get the single "everythings ok beep" when you booted up ?

Cypher

No it never does beep.  I know there is nothing wrong with as it has beeped bios errors before with other past problems that were corrected.

Cypher

I dont believe that.  Ive just stuck my brothers NorthQ 400 (NQ-4775-400) to the side and plugged it in.  Guess which machine Im typing on.  I could swear the applications and boot process are running better as well.

Guess its time for a new PSU.  Perhaps the power supply is to low or Tagan isnt as good as I though.  Shame really.

Im not sure If I can be bothered to take up the 3 year warranty.
