Post by: joecroxon on May 01, 2008, 11:28:11 AM
this is for a personal mini project, going traveling soon with a mate and would like to have a handy ampd speaker with me for my ipod.......
im not brilliant with electronics bt know the very bare basics,

powered by 2 x 9v batteries
wired up to 1 x 4ohm loudspeaker
input from a 3.5mm jack pluged into headfone socket of ipod

would this amp work?

NE1 got any tips on soldering?

would it not be easyer and maybe cheaper to buy a small set of battrie powerd speakers?

If not...

some components dont like heat, so using a set of small needle nose pliers to hold the components between the joint and component saves them, and keeps fingers cool

use a hot iron with a smallish clean tip

keep irons tip clean (wipe on a wet sponge)

soldered joints should be shiny not dull

joints should be convex ( look like a tiny mountain not a balloon).

tinning wires helps avoid stray wires, to do this put a small amount of solder on tip of iron and wipe the exposed metal of the wire through the solder.

dont get a battery powered iron.

I was given one for christmas last year and I reckon it was designed by Duracell to keep them in buisness. Its no where near as nice to use as a proper mains one either.

what about the cold fusion ones, that heat and cool in seconds, are they the same?

cheers for the tips guys, still no 1 commented on weva that amp would work? :S ?

and as for the cheaper and easier option, most of them only output like 0.5w,
and wheres the fun in just buying something! :D much more rewarding making it yourself

Not really much soldering to do with that amp. Could just Crimp the wires together, or use some insulation tape.

In fact with that unit Id just go with exactly that, some insulation tape, twist the wires together... sorted.

Only soldering youd need to do possibly is the headphone jack and theyre a piece of piss usually.

Would also like to say, you arent really making it yourself in that case. Youve got a pre built amp module, and a speaker, and a jack. May as well just buy a speaker set and get stereo sound.
