If anyone could price me up a decent PC Id be very thankful; Im not sure whats what these days. My girlfriend will be taking my old rig as hers has gone kaput (my old rig : 9800XT, 2000Mhz Athlon XP, 1.5GB RAM) so it would be nice if its an upgrade from that in some respects.

Budget is Ã,£750, and it needs 2GB of RAM. Im not really that fussed on hard drive size, a couple of 100GBs would do (I can never fill the ridiculously huge ones).

Thanks ladies and gents.

Edit : Forgot to mention, whilst a 19" TFT would be lovely in the future Im not fussed about a monitor/keyboard/mouse etc for this build, the Ã,£750 is for the base unit only. No OS is needed either.

Ã,£750 for a base unit alone can get you an awfull lot.  If someone hasnt allready later I should easily be able to price up a nice Core2Duo system.

was trying to keep it cheap, but with decent stuff... that comes in at just under Ã,£420 so plenty left to play with :)

(all from tekheads)

thats a nice case, 2gig of DDR2, decent MB with onbord gfx, 3200AM2, dvdcombo drive, 2x160gig HDs, and a floppy drive :)

if you want to spend more you should...

if you play a lot of games add a gfx card... tho the on-bord one is prtty good and youll have to soend (at a guess) Ã,£120+ on a gfx card to improve over it

or... go for a better CPU.... the 3200 comes in at 32... which is the point just before the price jumps... a 4200 is Ã,£110 and a 5200 is Ã,£190.... tho you wouldent be able to tell the difference betweek them)

maybe add a couple of quiet case fans too :)

oops,. forgot the PSU, http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=604614 is decent and Ã,£40 (quiet too)

Thanks guys. Aside from a lot of Office work I do play a lot of games so a decent graphics card would be a must, and Im not sure about processors these days with all of the dual core things and 64 bit this that and the other that seem to be about.

I was going to just make one up on meshcomputers to save the hassle initially but Ive heard a few bad things about them; so I thought Id turn the problem over to you guys :)

Since you dont need Windows you could get a similar spec buying the bits you need piecemeal for a fair bit less than that.
I would have started with an off the shelf HP box for about Ã,£420 inc vat, and add a fancy gfx card and the extra ram. That would include warranty from a major manufacturer, and dont forget unless you have a legit windows key you cant get updates these days.

Core 2 duos are absolutely fricking superb.  Make sure whatever you get has one of them in.

X2 all the way :p Tho to be honest what im hearing for price/performance the core duo is the way to go :)

I still prefer my good old AMD :)

Depends, Ive put a 5200+ on my shopping list, because its fast enough, and to get any better performance from either manufacturer will cost me about another Ã,£100+VAT, with a performance increase that doesnt justify the cost.

I was considering an E6700, but the Ã,£300+ price tag means im walking away.

Have done and Ive not regretted it. I have replaced AMD with Intel... 3 to be exact.

Cheers

Im a bit of an AMD fanboy tbh, but I would still take a core2duo over an AMD atm.  Thats how good they are comparing to the equivelant AMD, if you want to call it that.

The only advatage I see with AMD atm is the pricing, they have recently had another price drop and they are getting cheap.  Something like the X2 5200+ is extremely tempting for the money.

NOOOOOO !!!

stick with AMD :p

just... because :D

just bought a 5200AM2 :p

So, is it worth investing in an SLI mobo or is it just a gimmick that the average user wont get around to bother with? I imagine by the time I get around to ordering a second identical graphics card itll be out of date so Im not sure its worth the hassle.

Ceathreamhnan

To get a half decent motherboard youll find you end up with the facility anyway...

Sweenster

SLi is great if you want that few extra fps on a game

not worth the money though

the new cards coming out are faster than the last gen in sli and a darn bit cheaper too than buying two of the previous
