Title: Printers (reccomend.)
Post by: PuNk on September 11, 2006, 18:27:45 PM
I need a printer for uni, each assignment is 100+ pages, and having to go into uni to print it all off is a right pain, esp. when close to deadline.

Also I like my photography so good quality pictures need to be possible.

Atm im leaning towards HP or Canon, Ive had a lexmark in the past and it was rubbish so I dont want to try that again.

Budget is about Ã,£100, quite flexible though.

Just wanted to know if anyone has any reccomendations on brands of printers? Theres so many out there, but which are better in the long run? Which break easily? Which go through ink really fast? Which are easy to set up/need lots of attention? Any input much appreciated.

Epson: pretty good for 12months or so, but eat ink.

HP: the older ones were great but some of the newer ones are appalling.

Brother: these are good but I dunno what running costs are like.

Xerox: Sometimes melt but mostly pretty good.

Canon: Dunno.

Lexmark: lol

Samsung: 1610 is nice for the money and does everything you want but its basic.

Tbh, youd be better off with two if youve got room. A cheapie laser for text, and a proper color printer for pictures. I like Canon, as their service is impeccable. Ive had a couple freakish failures with my current 3:1, and they answer the phone immediately and sort me in five minutes. Unbelievable in this day and age. :ptu:

Heck, if its just text, get a dot matrix printer and some perf paper like in the beforetime.

Ive got the Samsung ML1510 laser, damn good printer for text and the toner carts are really easy to refil. All you do is buy more toner, prise the end cap off with a penknife and pour it in!

TBH unless youre planning on selling your prints, any old inkjet thats not a Lexmark will produce good photos these days. I have a Canon i450 that does a fantastic job, to the extent that Ive had people call me a lier when Ive told them the photos on my wall are ink jet.

A mono laser for printing out text and a colour inkjet for the pics is a good enough solution. I would personally avoid epson inkjets as the head is built into the printer and if it goes then you have to wang the whole item. I avoid anything Lexmark on principle of it being costly to run and not very good anyway.

We have got a pair of brother mono lasers both of which work well, official toner carts are expensive but you can get alternatives which are cheaper.

You could refil toner carts yourself but it can be messy or you can get a company to do it for you. Watch out for chipped carts though cause theyre extra painful to sort out.

many epson printers now run with heads built into the carts, though that voids the sole reason anyone had for buyuing them in the 1s tplace, the lovely Ã,£3 ink carts.

Lexmarks home usage stuff blows, but i had an X85 All-In-One.  Excellent piece of kit, very quick, very quiet and the build quality was comparable to a similarly priced HP.  Its still running in fact, but my grandmother has it because she wanted an all-in-one and i never used the scanner.

Rest I agree with though, the chip reset kits never work, and then combination of a mono laser and colour inkjet works perfectly well for anyone who isnt in need of a colour Laser.

The photo quality on the right paper of the newer HPs (Ive blagged a fancy A3 one) is excellent.

I paid Ã,£10 for a reclaimed Laserjet 4 when I lived in cambridge just over 5 years ago.  It is still going strong with its original toner cartridge.  bargain.

My HP LaserJet 1018 (as it turns out) arrived today, its spanking. 5 minutes to set up, very fast and very good print quality. Well worth the Ã,£50, Id recommend anything in that range bracket.

In my experience I have never gone wrong with a HP Laserjet printer.  Canons are good but the print quality and speed of print I find goes down quiet dramatically on the bubblejet models.
