Title: PSU Recommendation
Post by: Clock'd 0Ne on November 13, 2006, 11:54:04 AM
Could someone link me to a reliable PSU, preferably with a good warranty as my current one has died after 5 years.

Still using Socket A so it needs to have a detachable 4-pin plug if it is a 24 pin PSU. 450W+ would be nice, not too fussed about cost for something reliable.

NorthQ & Tagan Silent PSUs I have bought in the last year or two.  The NorthQ is quieter and has more connecting cable options.  However only 400W. The tagan in my machine has been a rock.

I should mention I would like something that will keep up when I upgrade to dual core or whatever next in the coming year. I wont be running a gaming rig like I used to but it will need to be solid for work.

My first thought was Tagan actually, I was wondering what the latest top brand was.

Zalman ZM460-APS 460W ATX V2.03 Dual PCI-E Noiseless PSU  works well on my brothers compy with twin GF7900XT graphics cards and a power hungry AMD 3200+64 bit CPU. The fan on the CPU is noisier!

If you dont like that option then Tagan or Enermax.

January issue of Personal Computer World has the results of testing a number of PSUs in on page 56 in an article on Understanding PC power supplies, except it wont be in the shops for a few weeks yet, I have a sub and get it early. Managed to blow up a Mercury 350 watt supply at 323W after 3 minutes, the 400W version didnt fair much better...

And Im still running on the Q-tek 550W PSU :P Although Im going to be upgrading in January, hopefully treat myself to a new system unit which will mean a new PSU.

Just for you... ;)

Got this badboy a couple of months ago, as my PSU at the time had a wobbly 3.3v line.

Does the trick just nicely. Lots of fans/drives/rubbish connected upto it, and my lines are perfectly stable.

There is some discussion on changing the PSU to 12 volt only and abandoning 3.3V and 5V lines as that would supposedly be more efficient.

Wont be happening for a year at least, if it ever does.

That NorthQ does look good for the money, but Ive never heard of them. Surely it cant compare to a Tagan/Enermax?

I have an antec neopower, damn good psu and the modular ability is handy and the build quality is great. Not the quietest psu in the world though

My personal order of preference...

PC Power & Cooling (http://www.pcpowercooling.com/home/) - the best in pretty much every sense (warranty, design, custom change service, reliability, etc)

Seasonic and Tagan are also fantastic. I have also had good experiences with several Antec PSUs (550w EPS12V, 480 True Blue). I recently bought an Antec Fusion HTPC case which came fitted with an Antec NeoHE 430w. Turns out its actually manufactured by Seasonic, which was a nice bonus :) Theyre pretty hard to beat if your main concern is clean power + low noise.
