Title: Quad core build
Post by: mr_roll on November 24, 2009, 22:44:28 PM
Thinking of putting a quad core system and getting Windows 7 64 bit too.

So Im thinking of basing it upon:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173368 - to begin with and upgrade when the 3.2GHz CPUs have come down a bit in price.
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/160931 - this seems like a good motherboard. It also supports xfire which ill be interested in the future.

I would search for these on tekheads but the sort function doesnt work in firefox for me.

People might say im mad for going AMD, but I like AMD more. Personal choice.

What Ram / PSU would you guys suggest?

PSU wise I cant fault my Corsair modular jobby, though as per usual I cocked up and got the one down from what I need. Its got ample power but only 2 ATX thingymajigs which is fine atm, but if I wanted to xfire them itd need 4 ><

i5 750, if you dont your crazy, you can currently oc them to over 4Ghz on Air if thats your thing.

Intel i5 750
MSI P55 GD65 (for one clicking overclocking) if your lazy, or similar board.
4GB DDR Memory, i use Dominator but the standard Corsair XMS stuff is nice to, and the G.Skill Ripjaw is very popular and well priced.
Graphics anything :P 4850, 4870, 4890 DX10 are well priced, 5770 would be the way to go for midrange DX11 until the higher priced cards both come down in price and AMD gets their ass in gear and starts circulating more stock.
Case upto you, a good Mid Ranger is still the Antec 300 at around £40
PSU well as Zpyder pointed out Corsair are great, either the VX550 or HX520 will more than power it, failing that the Be Quiet Darkpower i think it is get great reviews, if you want something cheaper perhaps and OCZ.
HDDs theres a nice write up/ comparison on Toms depending on the size you want.
DVDWriter Samsung 223B i think is the one both me and ClockedOne have, its great.
Cooler depending on what you want to spend i would go/wait for the Thermalright MUX120 to surface back in stock in a few stores, i asked in tek feedback earlier if they will be getting them, all the good reviews use them although i dont know the fit difficulty yet, just dont go for the Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 if you have big fingers, i broke a clip but i have a new part now so have one of these unused for sale for less than store price (brand new) :P. If you really want to push the boat out a Corsair H50 closed WC solution would be nice, but the Thermalright seems to perform just as well on Air for half the cost.

Going to have to hold off on the quad core, might build myself a cheaper quad core system. I have yet another debt to pay off :(
