Im in the market for a couple of those "clever" extension leads that switch off peripherals when the PC is powered off.

The problem I am having is working out which one(s) to buy and at which price point. There appears to be a lot of variation in the prices and I cannot figure out why :S

Tbh i never even heard of them so link me, im curious :)

This is one type:

There are (quite) a few if you google for "Energy Saving Extension"

And how much does one save per year?

Are there any independent tests/reviews to show they do actually do as stated?

I guess the only way would be to buy one and test it yourself for a quarter, then check your energy bill.

I was impressed my external HDD powered off automatically with my computer :)

Didnt even know that kind of thing was possible.

Im really surprised you guys dont know about these !

They look good and "tests" suggest that savings can be in excess of £30p/a. So the thing pays for itself in the first year.

Ive ordered a couple from CPC: http://cpc.farnell.com/one-click

Serious

They switch off all your peripherals that are plugged into the strip that might be still using power when you switch your compy off. I just use a manual switch on the strip.

Can save a few quid a year.

I have one of those I got for free ( from Södra forrestowners which I am a member of) have it with my TV and if I turn the the  TV of by remote the rest will turn of i.e. amplifier, digital box, DVD and a lamp.

Have a manual switch for my computers like serious.

Quixoticish

Might have to pick up some of those for the PCs and TVs, Ive got those remote controlled plugs at the moment but I keep loosing the damn remote.

Ive been looking at a power strip from EcoTek that is controlled via Ir. Do you have any problems with yours ? I wasnt sure about it not being "clever", in that it doesnt "sense" the power change and is literally a remote controlled on/off.

Do you know if the controller runs off of RF or Ir ? Id guess RF but if its Ir I might be interested as I could get my Harmony to switch them on/off as part of their standard action macro :)

Its IR as far as I know Nimrod. If I dig out the remote again Ill check for you.
