just got a phenom II x3 720BE but my msi ka790gx does not like overclocking , what mobo would be the best for this cpu ? . would an am3 mobo be the better way to go or stay with am2+ as i already have ddr2 1066 cas5 ram

Of course not, The Phenom 2 is an awful overclocker. So bad in fact a 720 just pulled 5.16 GHz in the THG overclock competition using evaporation cooling.

have i missed something here ? , i thought the phenom II liked overclocking  :w00t:

hmm ok lol but which mobo would be the best for this cpu ? , also would going am3/ddr3 make any difference in performance ?

chaotic_uk

from what i have seen this mobo is out of my price range atm :(

Custom PC gives the Biostar TA790GX a decent enough writeup for overclocking on the older phenoms.  Might be worth a look to see if it supports the 720.

I wouldnt bother with an AM3 board at the moment, unless you have the spare cash for DDR3.

Im sure Chaotic will be cooling with nitrogen. Note I didnt say Phenom 2

I know he wont be, but that board his a proven record as being an awesome overclocker.  Also your comment said that Phenoms arent good overclockers at all, when he clearly stated its a Phenom 2, even though the model number tells you that.

So what was the point of you saying anything at all?

i personally hate MSI and im sure nigel will agree they were the biggest arse with failure rates when we did them. We tried some recently and they havent got much better!

get something like asus or gigabyte...

chaotic_uk

the msi board i have will not allow overclocking at all with the ht multipler set at stock speed (x10) , so i will be changing it in the next few weeks and i am not sure which to get yet . been looking at the sapphire mobos , not sure if to go am3/ddr3 yet as i want it to last a good while

Yep, MSI have been legendarily crappy over the years, Asus and Gigabyte are generally very reliable though IME. Motherboards are one area I never think you should scrimp on and risk buying on a budget or to a poor brand, as it keeps your whole system going.
