Im looking to remotely control a machine running Windows NT4 from my XP Pro box. Ideally it would be good to control it from Linux as well, but I realise thats asking quite a lot. Does anyone know of some effective software for doing this? preferably free, but if it works Im willing to pay within reason.

nice one SteveF! I knew there was something but I couldnt remember its name. This looks perfect.

vnc works a treat, you can even contact your machine from an internet explorer window using a built in java client.  With a bit of DNS software, you can get onto your pc from any Internet cafe or from work, as long as the right ports are open.

Ive got realvnc, just make sure you get the latest release as an older version had a bug in it that if you knew what your doing you could bypass any password thats on it.  That was fun when someone hacked mine and deleted a bunch of stuff on my server pc.  Got talking to him on notepad when I caught him and shocked him a little by telling him his IP & ISP and if he didnt stop Id be contacting them.  Never got bothered again.

lol nicely done. Ive just downloaded the latest version of real VNC, gonna give it a go this afternoon.

well its up and running with my desktop machine, just re-installing linux and we shall see whats what

Just got DSL (Damn Small Linux) going on my lappy, and not only does the VNC work but DSL comes with a client for it so I didnt even have to install anything.

Sorry for the late reply, but theres also one called ultra vnc. Same idea as real, but it can do file transfers and such without having to get a payed version.

cheers for the suggestion Shakey, I dont really need file transfers through the control software so I think Ill stick with real for now. Good to know Ultra is there if I need it though.

Youre probably better off with TightVNC - friendlier to net connections that RealVNC is.
