Colin Farrell is to star in a remake of 'Total Recall', it has been confirmed.

The Irish actor will reprise Arnold Schwarzenegger's lead role in the 1990 classic.

Farrell is currently putting himself through a gruelling training regime in a bid to get in shape for the action hero part of Douglas Quaid.

He said, "I'm curious every time I go to work and I'm curious to go to work on 'Total Recall'.

"Script is cool. Script is smart. It's clever and it's well written and there's loads of action.

"I saw some of the pre-visualisations already and it's the first time in years where I went, 'Wow! I could be part of that? In that frame?' It's gone back to the original."

Talking about the film, producer Neal Moritz commented, "I think the world that [director] Len Wiseman is creating is incredible. It's a real world, a real future world, where the cities have just gotten so overcrowded that the cities are just built up, up, up, up."

He added: "We're playing it like a real world, but there's all these technological advancements to the real world, and it's just really, it's cool. It's an awesome movie. I'm dying—as a fan of movies, more than anything, it's a movie that I'm just dying to see."

Filming on 'Total Recall' will begin in May.

Mongoose

is my understanding of the word wrong, or is it impossible to reprise a role one hasn't played before?

You know, I'm not keen on the idea of a remake of Total Recall, but I would like to see a new version of "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale", the Phillip K Dick novel it was based on. Total Recall is nothing like it, but I'd like to see something made that's closer to the book.
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo... Again.

supposedly not set on mars

I actually think most of these recent remakes are a complete waste of time, the original Total Recall is a great film.

That's really the main point of outrage isn't it, you remake something that went wrong the first time. It's obvious that its yet another tired cash-in idea that has been passed around by the studio.

It needs to be set with Farell as a completely different character and in a new scenario for this work so the two show no signs of crossover.

I love "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" and "Total Recall" equally and for completely different reasons. The only way this could be half decent is if they took a pop at working back from We Can Remember It For You Wholesale and coming up with a different take on the film, as they are doing with the new Conan films. There's no reason not to, Total Recall followed the novella in concept only really so there's loads of room for a new interpretation. But to go back and just re-make the original film, what's the point?

Going on a few things I've read about this what's the point in calling it Total Recall, it probably doesn't share enough of the original film to warrant calling it a remake, just give it a new name, maybe stick a line on the advertising for the film saying "based on the story of..."

Course if it turns out to be an amazing film all this will be die away, big if though.

This is what I don't understand. Are they remaking "Total Recall" or are they doing a new adaptation of the text? I keep hearing both sides of the discussion but I'm not sure what their actual plans are.
