Hi Guys,

My friend has a pub, and he'd like to change is current standard BT router to something which will enable him to have 'Free' wifi for anyone, but limit speeds (1mb for example), this would still require a login and password, but then for his guests, credit card machine etc, give them the full, unlimited access, with a different login and password.

Any ideas which routers can do this? And how do you do it?  I'll be giving him a hand setting it all up, although I haven't a clue what to do. Some of the guest rooms are quite far away from the routers position, so ideally it should broadcast quite far?

Thanks a lot

could just use a wireless repeater for the people in the pub, link it to the main router via crappy wifi which will act as a limit for everyone there

802.11b is advertised at 11mbps but in use tops out at 6mbps max in practice... which should be plenty to share around a pub?

and then use a different router for everyone else  (or just the BT one as it is now?)

also makes it easy to have different SSIDs for them, so one can be called "FREE WiFi" and the other "PUB GUESTS" or something like that ?

also makes it the most user friendly/idiot proof system for when you're not there to help him (assuming he's not great with computers)

Depends on budget really and how reliable the connection needs to be, if budget is tight then get a half decent TP Link or a couple of them for different locations, can do guest wifi to separate personal and public traffic, and also offers bandwidth control.. Won't be as reliable as business grade kit though..

Budget business kit by the way UniFi looks to be a fairly good option, this is what I'm considering upgrading my kit to, although heard on a podcast that they were having issues with nexus devices strangely..
