My trusty Garmin Streetpilot is now showing its age and becoming unreliable. Im in the market for a new, cheapie jobbie.

Any recommendations? Should I stick with Garmin or are ThomasThomas still considered the daddy?

My requirements are:

Up to date maps that are easy to update would be welcome too, the Streetpilot seems to be a right arse to update.

Can be charged from a PC/mains/basestation type affair

if such a thing exists, and doesnt rely on AA batteries or the in car charger (mine appears to be broken)[/list]

Easy and clear to read, I dont want a popup and klaxons every time I pass a church, historic monument, petrol station or someones house unless Ive told it to.

I dont care about screen size or anything like that really or putting different voices on, and Im not overly fussed about having gatso/speed warnings.


Anyone that can steer me in the direction of a current bargain gets some stars too.

I have a TomTom One (3rd Edition) which was £80 about 18 months ago.

Charge from USB, Wall, Cigarette. Very simple. PC software has loads of updates in UK/Europe thanks to mapshare.

Simple and Effective. No MP3/Bluetooth/Wifi/etc but I dont care about that.

Can get speed camera updates for £20ish a year or something like that.

edit: V4 of the one I have is £109 at the moment but there are plenty other options. Halfords are having a upto 50% off Sav Nav sale at the moment.

Im in the same boat actually. My TomTom Go 500 is well out of date and constantly doesnt know about roads or roundabouts. Thing is they want £40 for the new maps - Id rather pay a bit mroe and get a new sleek sat nav witha  good battery.

Of all the brands Ive used though Ive always preferred Tom Tom I have to say. Garmin are ok but the ones Ive used have never seemed quite as slick. Mind you there was a cheapie on ebuyer that you could run the tom tom software on if anyone can remember the brand name?

New version of google maps on Android Phones has GPS & Turn by Turn navigation so that will be replacing my tomtom once it goes live in Europe

Whatever you get, get one which allows for off-road navigation and entering of coords in degrees and decimal minutes. Then you too can join the geeky world of geocaching...

i have garmin on my mobile phone.. dont use it as the Jag im currently driving has sat nav built in

Im waiting for Garmin to release an Android Nav, as Co-Pilot is useless.
Or the Google one, of its any good.

Orange and O2 both offer Telmap Navigator for free if youre on a contract over a certain value.  Im using it on Orange, and it even navigated me around a closed M1 the other week!

Im definitely not getting into all the phone based malarky, I want a proper device for it.

Also, based on your advice, the best deal Ive found seems to be this Tom Tom Start + free AC charger from one of our clients (Im going to ping him an email see if I can maybe get a bit more off too )

Tom toms are cool, they dont have the harsh militant voices like garmins do.

I got a tomtom 0ne - does anyone know where I can update the POI? My petrol stations etc are a lil out of date.

IQ Routes is definitely worth having.

got a Garmin Nuvi 255 from tesco for £80 and it took me all around europe perfectly over the summer.
