Title: Security Software Bundle
Post by: Penguin on May 03, 2006, 15:29:13 PM
I have had a few problems with my pc and I am trying to find a security software bundle to protect my pc from all sorts of things. I use the internet a lot and I have not really got a firewall or anything. What is the best bundle to protect my pc?

If you are paying:

Sygate Firewall for a software option (If Symantec havnt destroyed it yet)
Sophos or NOD32 for AV pacages, both excellent.

For free:
Zone Alarm Firewallm the basic is probably the best of the freebies now Sygate Personal has gone.
AVG Anti-Virus

Either way if you have a decent router with built-in firewall youll do better than either of the firewall option.

best advice is to grab the following

spybot search and destroy
adaware
avg antivirus
zonelabs zonealarm firewall

thats pretty much all you need :/
run them every few weeks and youll be fine :)

Bundled products usually are not particularly brilliant at any of their areas covered individually, you are better off downloading a select few programs to cover each area. Some of the best ones are FREE!

For Antivirus:

Try http://www.avast.com/ Avast!
or http://www.grisoft.com/ AVG Antivirus Standard

For firewall:

http://www.zonelabs.com/ Zone Alarm Standard
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=tpfirewall Tiny Personal Firewall (this is the old, free version)

Just a few good examples there.

Avast! got absolutly panned on the latest Computer Shopper reviews,  They recommended AVG or Bullguard.

AVG will be discontinuing the support for the free version at some point in the near future but its only Ã,£23 for 2 years so its worth buying.
It has priority servers, so if a big virus outbreak occurs then the paid up customers get the updates pushed straight to them.  Whereas the freebie customers have to wait until the load on the free servers has lessend.
The free version also doesnt support X64, whereas the paid up version does.
They also have no intention of adding x64 support to the freebie.

Id say go AVG and pay for it.
They do their own bundles with Firewalls and Antispyware too.

AVG plus Firewall (1 Licence - 2 Years) is Ã,£31

Well if they recommended them i know the review is wrong

Avast for firewall (AVG is a terrible piece of software)
Zonealarm for firewall as sygate is now gone to symantec
Winblows Antispyware
is all you need IMO

and alot of common sense
 :D

I went to download the new version of AVG after my new HDD install (:() and its already pay for. Now I have to dig out the old version.

Well worth it though, AVG has worked flawlessly for me.

I wouldnt know what else to advise for firewall as Im sat behind a router.

If youre on NTL or Blueyonder broadband, they have a free firewall/AV bundle which isnt bad.

A lot of the bad press for AVG is going from the old version, rare definition updates, quite slow.

None of this is the case with the new one.

And before one of you twigs, yes.  I am a reseller for AVG.  But im not asking you to buy it through me :D

I have those and they work well enough for personal use. If you visit dodgy sites or pron ones then set up a seperate user  with as many features switched off in Internet Explorer as you can live without.

Norton Internet Security 2006.

It has everything I need to protect my PC; including firewall, antivir and a spam filter. It gets regular automated updates to make sure its always up against the latest internet nasties and is incredibly easy to handle  - very important with the firewall, as a lot of people are put off if its too complicated to set up.

Its also the very first thing that crashes, dies, or just decides to disable certain parts of itself whenever an infection occurs.

Norton is still crap. I know someone using 2006, yet they still have a crapload of viruses on their machine... why? "cause norton takes too long to scan".

Much better products can be had out there for free imo, and if an exploit occurs in one that can disable it, it doesnt completely remove every single piece of security on your PC.

TBH then it was just better than the limited known competition.

Hasnt happened on my machine yet.

I would suspect that if they have a crapload of viruses on their machine, they must be doing something else wrong, too.

Norton does find the viruses, right? Or am I misunderstanding you? And if they keep getting viruses - regardless of the software they use - then chances are its their mistake. (I dont want to pick a fight or anything, it is actually me trying to be helpful...)

True, but as far as I understand the Norton Settings, its not really just one program, anyways.

bit of a necro there mate.

But in all honesty taking from an experience I endured recently, Norton 2006 on a computer of my mates, now this lad is doing a computer science degree, runs his own computer/it company, and is a network admin for quite a large solicitors firm.

Understandably, if something goes wrong with my computer I turn to him, and im no slouch at computers either.

4 Viruses at once, norton would refuse to open, and simply crash on his machine. AVG wouldnt load up after installing. The only piece of anti virus software that saved him was NOD32 after my recommendation.

Hes a massive advocate for norton, in fact its the only software he installs on new computer builds, or uses. On larger networks its symantec corporate. After his experience with it hes turned tail and now loves nod32.

The guy who said it took too long to scan had a point, if computer maintenance is made as unattractive as possible, people will not want to do it. It was updated, yet it didnt prevent the viruses from infecting his machine (same as with my classmate in uni above), and it took forever to complete a scan of his machine.

What can I say? Not on my PC it doesnt ...

How does that work? Norton scans all the time, or is your acquaintance only running system scans occasionally? (As opposed to having stuff scanned directly at download.)

A gun to the head would never make me recommend Norton.

About the only package that I think is any good is Panda and the reviews dont take too kindly to it :( It has a few other things going for it though :D

But for free, Avast, ZA and spywareblaster/spybot is the best combination. AVG sucks bollocks nowadays, used to be alright but it is average at best these days.

Oh, and Norton sucks.... just to confirm.

Cheers
