Looks like its time to buy a new 250GB SATA drive to replace the old 120GB. Even though the old one isnt even half full its causing crashes and stoppages. Wonderful things, you buy one and when it breaks down four years later you buy another one, thats twice the capacity and half the price.

Im on my third RMAs Maxtor in five years. Might have to pay for the next one. :D

Eggtastico

Maxtor have gone poor.
Ive had more maxtor failures in the last 3 years than anything else.
Looks like they are back to where they started.

Serious

so far I havent had an early failure with a Maxtor, this is the first one to actually go wrong. Getting another as they are cheap, if it goes they can repair/replace it.

I wouldnt touch maxtor with a bargepole

Indeed.

Seagate/Samsung all the way IMO.

Technically they are seagates now

Hopefully itll only be a matter of time before the maxtors get booted out the door.  Seagate all the way though, the 5yr warrantee speaks for itself.

I buy Seagate now but I have been faithful to Maxtor so far. I have 6 of them and they are great.... hwoever I cant trust them to much if I have them in mirrors :D pair of 160gb, pair of 250 and a pair of 80gb... still, they are good drive so far as I can tell.

The only drive I will avoid are Hitachi (IBM) and in days gone by Fujitsu.

There is no conclusive winner/loser in the amount of drives I have people come to me that need replacing, Seagate/WD/Maxtor/IBM they all have their own stories to tell.

Interesting article here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6376021.stm

Aye, my first one was killed by the MB in the night, the second indeed was bad, and the third is great so far. So just one actual bad drive in five years. Id buy one again at the right price.

I used to lust after a 512Mb quantum fireball drive back when I had a 170MB one...

Looks even worse than I thought, cant get the drive to image onto a second and the backup image I have is corrupted

Unfortunately hardly worth it, a 120GB drive new will set you back at the most Ã,£36.

[edit]

After some nasty problems I have managed to copy the system over to the spare 120gb ide drive and its working, if a little sower than the SATA :)

Theyre all the same, you get some good some bad.  Think Ive used every current HD manufacturer now.  Only drives Ive had die are the IBM 60GXP, 75GXP and 120GXP.  My current Hitachis have been great.

Had two of the IBM 60GXp goes, couldnt be bothered sending back the second one, so put it on the stove and set it on fire, after smashing it with a hammer.

Hitachis are very good/fast these days, dont let the Deathstar farce put you off recent drives.
