Im hopefully going to be moving in to my 1st flat soon (buying it). And probably wont be getting a phone line to start with, but I want sky.....can I do this, as far as I knew you have to have a phone line when they install it?? Ive emailed sky, but no reply as of yet.

Cheers

Mardoni

if you plan on using anything other than Freeview via your sky box, youll need a phone line.

chrisdicko

Na, I was wanting full a full sky package really.....dont want freeview. Is there no way round it that you know of??

Not true - no phone line into sky - full sky package and have done for over a year including interface updates.
Phoneline only used for the silly games, paying via tv and box office.

If you go for a decent package you can get sky+ and they will not charge the extra £10 fee

Mardoni

Havent they been on to the phone to you every week or so, telling you that they will be sending out an engineer as there appears to be a problem with your box ?

Their T&Cs require that you have a phone line so that the box can call home and confirm that it is happy. One reason for this is to stop people building up huge debts using the payg movie service. Either way, if your box doesnt call in for x days you usually get a call from Customer Services to arrange an engineer visit.

Neither my parents nor my grandparents have had this and both of them have had the phone line unplugged for years now.

Porch Monkey

To get Sky Installed you have to give them a land line number and it has to be connected to do the activation afaik.

After the first year you can pull the plug with impunity.

Mardoni

:o
If I pull the plug for more than a couple of days Cust Services are on the phone...weve had sky since they were BSB !

I guess were just special then :)

Porch Monkey

You always have been mate. Thats why you took the short bus to school. :P

Not even a year, couple of weeks and that is it

Nimrod, not one call

twist

Weve had sky tv since before all this Sky Digital shism - We now have multiroom and although the two new boxes (the hd box and other sky box) are both plugged into the phone our original box isnt and hasnt been for years.

Technically if I wanted we could install a dish at another house - use the subscription card from our original box and be getting a full sky subscription somewhere else for the price of multiroom (£10)

chrisdicko

Yeah, I remember when I ordered sky at my parents it required a phone line.

I just spoke to my friend and asked him about it, and he said his gran has had it for years, but she has never had a phone line in her house ever, there isnt a phone line going to her house at all. He said she has a proper package, but cant order movies or any interactive services etc.

Dreambox + Software Cam + Internet = problem solved & no monthy fee

Technically, thats Illegal in the T&C, but its done a lot. Especially abroad in Expat places. Theres also devices that act as virtual cams, a "diablo cam wirelss" for example
