Steam (a rant)

So I got a new computer - primarily as I left my job and handed back my dell laptop, my personal laptop is a mac (cos someone on here told me they're 3 times faster) and I wanted a windows machine at home too.

Figured since I've got some free time I'd be able to play some games for the first time in ages - so I downloaded steam (I heard that was what all the kids use these days) - first issue, I was too keen - had only just installed my OEM version of Windows 7 and the steam 'update' kept crashing.... I've got a very slow internet connection so spent the rest of the day downloading various windows updates, eventually I managed to install/update steam without it crashing.

I then went to purchase a game - Elite Dangerous - 4 GB or so to download - on my super slow internet connection this will take a while... so I set it downloading, steam tells me I can exit and continue downloading at will. It takes ages.. I leave it on all day and all night and in the morning it is at like 60%... later in the day it gets to 75%... I'm getting excited - that evening I'll get to play an awesome game for the first time in ages... later that evening I check on the progress... 9% WTF steam???? Somehow it reset itself.

Has anyone else had this problem - presumably not with the download speed itself but with steam downloading stuff then randomly starting again - tis a huge pain for me given that it will likely take a couple of days to download the thing. Steam is up to date, Windows is up to date... yet it screwed up.

Can't say I've ever had a problem with Steam downloading stuff.  Although I do have a fast connection.
The Rockstar Launcher however can get in the F*cking sea for all I care.

knighty

has it not downloaded fully, and then started downloading a massive update ?

never had any problems with steam here... over the moon with it tbh... steam is the only reason I pay for games instead of downloading a pirate copy !

Bacon

Steam is by far the easiest platform for downloading & playing games.

I would echo what Knighty has pointed out, Elite is a massive game, i would assume you have downloaded the original client and now your on updates.

Elite was not the best game to choose on a slow connection, i would have tried a couple of small indie's first to keep me occupied while the bigger games downloaded. :D

I did update steam before I tried downloading anything - though given the time it was taking to download perhaps another update was released...

I don't play many computer games - I very occasionally play the GTA series + red dead redemption on the playstation (only reason I've got a playstation - otherwise it is a blue ray player). I wanted Elite for the PC but probably won't buy any other games, I think Elite alone will be more than enough to keep me occupied - it is something a bit special IMO - I'm interested in physics, I'm interested in trading... the whole concept appeals to me, the free roaming open ended nature of it too - just like the free roaming sandbox concept with GTA got me hooked since the very first top down 2D game was released. Though with Elite having an entire galaxy to explore is just incredibly awesome...

Anyway it is at approx 60%-ish now - hopefully I'll have it by tomorrow evening - I think I'll be considering getting fiber installed in the next couple of weeks.

knighty

I meant an update for Elite

most games will download the newest version, but if there's an update just out recently you can download the game and then it instantly has to update

plus, as Jamie said, Elite is massive :-(

have you played hotline mami ?

give that a go, it's small, it's cheap, it's awesome... and it'll keep you entertained while Elite downlads

Dave

ah OK, it could be that I'm now 70% through an update if it started the update automatically

I wasn't actively monitoring it - I had seen it previously on 70 something% then hours later I came back and it was showing 9%

would have to be a seriously big update though

Eggtastico

chances are it is an update.
There was a big update recently for power play.

Ive only just started playing elite myself.. despite being a beta backer & building a PC last August. Just not had spare time.
Ive had a blast so far in trading & exploring. Just about made enough credits to start hunting

Dave

well it got up to 96% this time... after over 24 hours... then an hour later I went to check on it feeling hopeful and... FML - it showed 27%

now at 30%, will leave it running again overnight

Dave

actually you guys might well be right re: it being an update - am sure when I went to download it initially it said something about the file being 3.9something GB... looking in steam folder the whole thing is 6.2GB with Elite being the only game - in the apps folder the game itself seems to be 5.72GB so far... presumably the update(s) are a few GBs or so too?

Would anyone be able to do me a favour and confirm - when you look int he folders in steam what size is the folder containing Elite with the latest updates?

Cheers :)

Bacon

A user on reddit reported a size of 5.2GB but that was 2 months ago. I'll keep searching.

I read 8gb earlier

guess it depends when you've installed and how many updates you need ?

also, I'm not sure if updates are deleted, or replace original files ? - so you might download a lot more than the final file size

Dave

thanks guys, 8GB would make sense... maybe/hopefully it is just updates etc.. I'll have it tomorrow evening if I'm lucky.... :)

Eggtastico

pity you didnt get chance a few weeks ago.
There was a boost in rare trading (google it diso ma corn) - everyone made a packet!
THere a few rare trading guides around to help you though

Dave

well I've been a bit ill so back at my parents house to rest, brought the new computer back too... download going 26 times faster... should hopefully, finally, have the game in an hour :)
