Title: Symbian. Your comments / mini-reviews welcomed
Post by: snellgrove on May 03, 2006, 18:44:25 PM
Hallo :)

I am feelin for a new phone, and wanted your thoughts on the Symbian operating system.

I am really very interested in the Nokia N80 click1 (http://www.nokia.com/nseries/index.html?loc=inside,main_n80) click2 (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/Nokia_N80_Review.php)

and want to know as much about the Software, as I can. Im totally unfamiliar with Symbian really, and have never really much liked Nokias software (at all, in fact :P)

Id like to know (if possible) things like, with regards to the WiFi - how many profiles can it store? as Id like to use the WiFi at home, and at work - do I have to keep entering details, or can it store Home & Work, and just detect which APs are around and hook up to the appropriate one, etc.

And how easy is it to add software? (seems fairly decent from what Ive seen so far) - ideally Id like to add OGG support (dont want much do I ;) ) and be able to get this talking to my (linux) PC @ Home

any comments would be appreciated, even if you dont think theyll be helpful.. I just want your thoughts on Symbian.

Many thanks

Spose BXGTi16V will help here, youre a hardcore Symbian user, IIRC? :D

If you want software, format support, and syncing to linux, your better off going for a windows mobile smartphone, at least with multisync you have a decent chance of getting syncing working with your linux PC, windows mobile has a massive application library, more so than symbian in my opinion.

I hate the Symbian OS, my mum has a Nokia N70.
What a horrible clunky phone that is.

Id agree with getting a phone with the windows OS,  Have a look at the O2 IQ phone.

Wifi, QVGA screen and Windows Mobile 5.  And if my previous smartphones have been anything to go by, phenominal battery life.

Its not the symbian OS that you hate then, its the series 60 UI for the symbian OS, which is getting on a bit.

Symbian runs on much lower speed processors than windows mobile bloatware - thats why its penetration is greater than WM.

Dont get me wrong, I like WM - it runs great on my Dell Axim x51v - but most of the current crop of phones are too slow to run the decent apps - like megadrive emulators with the sound enabled. Theyre fine with the sound off however in my experience.

Im a little confused, the S60 software is great on the N-Gage, but when they transplanted it into the N70 platform they just cocked it up.

Poor battery life, confusing key layout and a poor quality screen.
But thats more hardware than the software they run.

different Interface GUIs are better. I quite like UIQ, but a lot of Symbian officionados hate it.
