Title: The Chronicles of Riddick HD
Post by: neXus on September 08, 2007, 21:18:42 PM
So I got my xbox 360 elite and hd drive and got The Chronicles of Riddick as one of the movies.

I have seen it on dvd and in the cinema part from looking amazing and sound a lot better the experience was so much better.
Not only did it have a few more scenes over the cinema (becuase you need to get bums on seats but directors are limited to what people consider to long) It had so much more compared to the DVD.

There was a lot more in regard to what a furian is and was and extra scenes in that regard but nearly every few minutes the hd movie had so much more to it.
Every scene had just a few extra seconds to it - longer shots, longer pans and for me made the movie a lot better and a lot more understanding and how it was meant to be and even still with the extras a few unfinished scenes left out.

HD movies have been around longer than the discs, so yep Pirates can get them & LOTR Trilogy looks fantastic in HiDef

About 15gb a film on average, unless its WMV HD, then its lower

Indeed, this is true, I have friends go "that is an old movie that cant be hd" But do not realise that for quite a few years now movies have been shot in HD capable formats and only loosing quality through the cinema real and compressed to fit on dvd.
New films in the last 5-10 years will look better but I think It was 10-15 years at least in some form of Hi deff format.

If you have a nice set up and pick the right movies (the ones that not only look and sound good but the people have gone all out with the hd and made the effort to include everything they can and not just put the looks on it)

The Chronicles of Riddick - Did a great job on the hd, very enjoyable watch
The fast and the furious all they have done is put it in hd looks, the sound is about the same as the dvd

I have serenity coming in the post soon and that apparently is an all out hd and I have 300 mainly for the sound and the looks of that BUT also the 20 minutes of extra shots not seen even in the cinema.

I think since they can be more expensive then DVD for the newer ones it is defiantly worth reading up on what movies to get that make it worth the hd.

AS egg said the illegal folk should also pick and choose becuase it will be average 15gb and since duel layer you could have rips of up to 30gb but more likley 20gb for the full on ones.

Blue ray or hddvd - I still think hddvd and xmas being the time to choose since there are not many rentals and I asked the other day what the rental  place thought about the HD formats and they said Xmas being the time that they would see which one wins out and whether to properly stock them as rental movies when they know how many players have been bought.
They also think that just becuase of the name and the price the HDDVD format and players over blue ray and will be the winner. Blue Ray  currently a nose ahead just down to being in the expert entertainment level and being the better quality format.

HiDef standard has been around for a good 20years+, nearer 25. just they never had the capacity to distribute them without swapping reels/discs throughout the film.

Also, for Old films, they can remaster them & Re-Scale them - Though the Majoirty of films have always been shot in a resolution higher than the HiDef Standards we use today.
just nicked this from WIkipedia
* Academy Sound (Sound movies before 1955): 15 mm × 21 mm (1.375) = 2160 × 2970
* Academy camera US Widescreen: 11 mm × 21 mm (1.85) = 1605 × 2970
* Current Anamorphic Panavision ("Scope"): 17.5 mm × 21 mm (2.39) = 2485 × 2970
* Super-35 for Anamorphic prints: 10 mm × 24 mm (2.39) = 1420 × 3390

Typical high-definition home video uses the following resolutions:
* 1280 × 720
* 1920 × 1080

So theres still room for improvement ;-D

Yeah, Riddick is great in hd.

Other movies that look excellent are Serenity, the Bourne films, and Hot Fuzz. Also, Heroes: Season 1 is very good quality and well worth a purchase.
