Just go on your Jack Jones you namby pamby, its a long film so good way to kill an evening.

Pretty good overall I thought too, but takes a while to get going. Not as mature or dark as LOTR though.

The way it should be tbh too. The hobbit to me was always a kids book that served as an introduction to middle earth. I feel that part of its charm is how at a young(er) age you could read the hobbit, and then read lotr, either afterwards, or a year or two later when you're slightly more able to digest the story.

I've heard mixed reviews about the hobbit, and I suspect some of the negative is coming from people expecting it to be LOTR 4. My only gripe is that they've split it into 3 movies. I've not seen the film yet, but I worry that they've overdone the long scenic panoramas etc to pad it out.

I guess the way I said that would make you think I'm saying it negatively, but actually I agree that it perfectly suits the tone of the book, which is definitely lighter. I think it will work as a 3 part as well, the pacing is good overall and you don't feel anything has been left out but also don't feel like it drags on. Better that than cramming it all in and losing all the great depth Tolkien writes in. If you enjoyed LOTR there is absolutely no reason to not enjoy this.

Thanks for the offer, i'm only about an hour or so away, but i did go and watch it on friday night!

It was a slow starter, picked up a bit after Glee phase, it does need to be long though to get all the information crammed in, so i much prefer potentially another 10 hours for the 3 parts, plus i cant wait for all 3 to come out and the extended versions, watching the 3 back to back with the 3 LOTR's is going to be a challenge!
