oh..... NF4 here too, so I guess its ok :)

and yeah, next to no increase in CPU usage with HD intensive stuff.... tho with a newish CPU (5200x2 here) I dont think wed really notice it anyway ?

4 Drive RAID 0 was pointless as Im sure many of you expected.

As a Windows boot drive it did not help performance noticeably at all compared to 2 Drive RAID 0.  So Ive gone back to having two 2 Drive RAID 0 setups. Much better :)

mmmmm, im confused as to why thats better.... :o

just for data security ?

if 4 drive RAID 0 is no faster, then the fact that its twice as likely to die taking all your data with it makes it worse than 2 drive RAID 0.

knighty

yeah.... but im sitting here with 6 drives in raid 0 :p

to pot with security, i want SPEED!

zoooooom?

a perfectly valid, if somewhat mental, attitude. Question is, are you actually getting any more speed than WBs 2 drive RAID? if so, enjoy, if not, why bother?

knighty

thats just what Im thinking..... am I getting any extra ?

I dont store anything this pc, and everything important is already backed up... (actually, now i think about im going to set an auto-back-up thingit to run to a network drive once a week)

think i need to run some benchies :o

Also think about the various points where there could be bottlenecks - how is your RAID controller connected to your chipset, what speed are your storage channels, etc.

No point having a 25 drive RAID-0 if theyre being channeled through a 32 bit 33mhz PCI slot! If youve got a hypertransport link or youre using a hardware RAID card through a PCI-E 8x slot then thats another story... (in which case role on the SAS-RAID)

Id still prefer to have some form of hardware redundacy.  Had  abad experiance with a dying hard drive, I was quite lucky to get all my music of it in time.

Personally I find raid 5 scsi/sata effing quick enough without the fallbacks and pains of ficing a raid 1 or 0.

If your happy that you have got your data safe and youare happy to reload, then by all means, thumbs up.

Serious

Easiest form of drive redundancy is to copy your main drive/rid combo onto a backup single drive and keep it updated every so often.

Important stuff should be backed up on separate media and if its really worth money stored off site.

Remember it takes hours to download the pron, mp3 collection and videos you have - keep them safe.
