Title: Thread starter - THE NEW BOND!
Post by: mrt on November 17, 2006, 13:11:13 PM
Well I thought I would open a thread for the new Bond film, Casino Royale.  A workie has saw a free screening of this last night in Gloucester and today has come in saying its the best Bond he has ever seen and not only that, its a fantastic film.  Have to admit I do like the film noir element with the black and white scenes.

I am seeing at the weekend ...

Cant wait to see it from the reviews and trailers Iââ,¬â,,¢ve seen it looks and sounds great and a welcome return to a more gritty hardened Bond.

The last few films put way too much emphasis on the gadgets and CGI effects with the story often being relegated to second place.

And I hope this film shuts all the Daniel Craig haters up talk about pathetic with web sites and the like set up to get him removed even before they had started shooting.

Ive never had a problem with Craig as an actor, I really havent seen much of his work to judge him on to be fair, but that is not my problem with him being chosen as bond.

My problem with him being Bond, is what I have learnt bond to be over the years of watching bond films from being yay high.  That is not someone who is a short blond chap with looks, style and a general build that you associate with her majestys Royal Marines.

That is the problem I will face watching the movie at some point.  Im sure Ill get over it and I hope he makes a fantastic bond, but Its just going to be a bit weird for those reasons.

I saw it last night.  Its very different to the Bond films of the past.  Theres not so much of the humour thats been present in the past films and a lot more talk about feelings!  Bond is darker and moody.

Sony must have paid a fortune for the product placement they got.

Its not bad, but very different.  Just make sure you go to toilet beforehand.  In the cinema I went to loads of people went in with beers and couldnt hold it for the 2.5 hours of the film.

Well I saw it last night and thought it was really good, as Danny said though its very different from the previous bond films, there still plenty humour in it but not as much as there was.  Is it a good thing, Id have to say yeah, it looses all the campness that was in the last few bond films.

Oh and Eva Green in that dress  :heehaw:

It was a bit silly, phones, laptops, you name it.  I also wonder if ford have done enough to get the new Mondeo and DBS out and sold in the american market.

The movie itself was fantastic and well worth the hype it has been recieving as of late.  Again the humour was there, but not the typical cheesy one liners we love and hate.

The only thing I found weird about the film is how if Im not mistaken is that its set before doctor no in the career of commander Bond, but yet how its set in the modern day?

I think for the first time we saw a true interpretation of who, what bond is.  As a complete human being.  Not the seemingly invinvible bond we have seen the last 20 films.

Also, on a side note, the film reminded me why I love Italy so much.  :(

8/10

Its like Batman Begins. Its restarting the canon from scratch and (hopefully) taking it in a different, darker, better direction.

Seeing it on Tuesday all being well.

Its not bad, but overrated. Slow story which ends 30 minutes before the film does. Bourne-esque direction and stunts. Let down by weak characters and instantly forgettable scenes.

7/10. I may revise downwards in the coming weeks :)

(Go and see Prestige instead. Thats a 9/10!)

I loved it. Another spot on performance by Daniel Craig; an excellent action film and worthy of Bond film status. Love the direction they have taken it in - it doesnt end 30 minutes before the final scene either, its character development. Well executed battles and chases, great witty moments.

It like, totally sparkled!

Bond films should stand alone, not have 30 minutes leading to nothing which, may, possibly, perhaps, be expanded on in a future film. A few character arcs during the film is acceptable and rather desirable, but to essentially end the films story and then spend the remaining time doing the story arc is rather strange.

Daniel Craig plays his role quite well, but it loses the bond-ness for me. Yes it was more believable but so what? Bond was great because of the unruffled nature of Bond. This film, while good, is more like Bournes old brother than a Bond film, which isnt necessarily a bad film to make - but invent a new character for it.

Anyway I think the proof is in the re-watch. How many of you are really that bothered about seeing it again. I know I couldnt care less. Whereas the two best films of the year V for Vendetta and The Prestige are worthly of a instant re-viewing.

v for vendetta was AWFUL!

and casino royale was most excellent, it didnt have any of the relying on the gadgets and was much more real

It had less gadgets that doesnt mean it was more realistic. I mean the first 20 minutes of action, that was right on the dollar wasnt it. I see people doing that all the time - in Jackie Chans dance videos.

yea wasnt really into the action scene, afterall he is meant to be a spy, not demolition man
i think if they made it more "clandestine" itd be very good

They need to sack off all the ridiculous fighting. They just replaced silly gadgets with silly stunts. Then youll have a good film - Craig would play a superb cold hearted killer spy

It was only really that first scene with the free running that was over the top. It was no worse than Brosnan straightening his tie underwater while driving a super speedboat down the Thames in the other films, you expect this kind of thing in a Bond film, as you would Mission Impossible.

You cant justify Bond 21 by comparing it to other ones and saying theyre worse. Im commenting on the quality of this film, yes its better than the others (well some of them) but so what, that doesnt mean its necessarily a good film.

Sam, I think you are on your own on this; I went with a large group of mates and each and everyone of us said this film was absolutely superb.  The Bond genre is evolving and needs to get with the times, this film has much more grit and emotion as a whole.  Bond had started to get a bit cheesy .. which was great for the days of Sean and Roger but did need a facelift.  We all came out of this film saying wow that was really great.  Just the fact that he takes a battering from scene to scene make its much more likable. It is a little different, but the overall concensus was that its right up there with the best bond movies and is definately moving with the times.

Bond rocks!!!!!!!

I watched it and was thoroughly disappointed in it.

No car chase, no Q at all in there whatsoever, no Gadgets except a defribulator used incorrectly (it doesnt start your heart, it stops it, if your flatlined your f**ked).

Too much bollocks in there, and boring casino playing crap.

Generally a poor film. Nothing to say about the actor who played bond, he was alright, just the entire film script was lacking.

Another way to describe this film... Just another spy movie.

EVERYTHING that bond has stood for, crazy car chases, expensive cars decked out with gizmos, Q getting upset over bonds recklessness with the gadgets, Seemingly impossible odds stacked against him.

None of that was in this film.

Nigel says the cheese has been removed... BUT THATS WHAT MADE BOND! his obnoxiousness and sheer luck. Bond always gets in a tricky situation, kills the boss man, and saves the girl.

As I said... it was "just another spy movie". Should not have the bond title on it, as that could have been mission impossible 4 and noone would have noticed the difference.

Quoteno Gadgets except a defribulator used incorrectly (it doesnt start your heart, it stops it, if your flatlined your f**ked)

I think that if a patient is in a very fine ventricular fibrilation (which displays as a flatline) then a defibrilator would be used. However if they declared the patient asystolic then there shouldnt be any defibrulation.

Aye. but this wasnt in a hospital it was VF yet he was capable of putting paddles on himself, then it stopped dead... then the girl shocked him and he came around much like rebooting a computer. Perfectly back to normal. Doesnt happen. It was rather lame anyhows.

Ive no doubt the scene from the movie was bollocks, they always are. I just thought Id share that little nugget of useless information about flatlining not always meaning no defibrilation.

Lame film, tbh.  Overhyped.

Craig plays a fairly good bond but theyre gointg to have to bring the gadgets and humour back if the Bond series is to survive.  As it stands, itll die on its arse...
