Title: ubuntu, youre a pain in the arse...
Post by: Badabing on September 05, 2006, 10:59:49 AM
Mac owners, of whom there are few...

Does anyone/has anyone used Ubuntu as either a live or install and managed to get the bloody thing to work at a res higher than 1078x724 (or whatever it is)? i get either that option or 800 x 600 - which are useless as i am using a Apple Cinema Display (1680 x 1050)...

:(

Im running happily at 1152x864 in Kubuntu on my main machine. :)

Do you have an ATI or Nvidia card in your Mac? You should be able to select the best resolution (http://www.mepis.org/docs/index.php?title=Dpkg-reconfigure_xserver-xorg) (Mepis = Ubuntu Fork) by typing:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg into the console.

im using the 9200 Radeon in it... but its a live disc and i dont want to install it, yet (especially as there is this issue with the resolution).

There should be a way to add some boot parameters, might want to ask on #ubuntu or even see if there is a ubuntu-mac specific channel. Those IRC geeks are ususally laid infrequently enough to know such things.

ive knocked the idea on the head, primarily because of how f*cking stupid Mac OS X is in respect to re-partioning and installing another OS along side...

You need to reformat then partition, sack that, Mac OS X is in 95% of situaitons better than Linux for me, its just not as downright quick...

Cant you strip OS X down a bit to quicken it? i.e.: as its a *nix, cut unnecessary services and the like. I like how with Ubuntu, I can log into a lazy full bangon Gnome session with weather alerts and small guatemalans telling me Ive got mail, or I can be stealthy, quick and austere with Openbox. :ptu:

yes

and i have - i got rid of dashboard etc. - its quick enough for me, but ubuntu was more snappy, but then its a lot leaner, visually.
