Title: Unexpected Doc Brown moment
Post by: Mongoose on May 19, 2013, 18:31:37 PM
I went to see the new Star Trek film earlier this week, loved it, wont say any more for fear of accidental spoilers, but if you like Star Trek then deffinitely go see it.

Anyway, it made me want to watch Star Trek II and III again, so I did, and came upon a startling realisation.

The Klingon captain in Star Trek III is Doc Brown from Back to the Future!

I had never noticed that before, so I thought I'd share.

Also in the next film they use Doc Brown's Klingon Bird of Prey to travel back in time to the mid 1980s.

It's easy to miss at a casual but the voice gives it away at times.

that was what gave it away, once I'd spotted it it was fairly obvious but I must have seen that film 10 times and I've never noticed before.

The new Trek film was "meh". It wasn't a bad film, but it certainly wasn't mind-boggling or anything, and wasn't up to par with the better Trek films (II, VI, First Contact, 2009 remake etc.)

There's also a hideous moment that is horribly timed, didn't need to be there and was pretty much on par with Vaders "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!" in the prequel trilogy.

Time for a new director and some new writers to take the helm for the next Trek film I think, and they need to take it in a new direction and not feel as though they keep having to reference things that have come before.

perhaps interestingly, while there were aspects of the ending I didn't like, the moment you describe wasn't one of them.

Having watched II and III this weekend I must agree that the new film is not a match for Wrath of Khan, but I don't think anything would be. Overall I enjoyed it slightly more than the 2009 remake, which I liked a lot but which suffered (in my opinion) from shoehorning Kirk into the captains chair much too fast. I realise that's supposed to be a plot point, but it just felt contrived to me.
