Title: Unreal Tournament 3 - How easy is it to make maps?
Post by: Batch on June 01, 2008, 11:37:00 AM
I have been interested in this game for a good while now and I have recently came across how great the game is in allowing the gaming community to be able to make their own maps/mutators/characters etc.

I have decided to get a PS3 in late July to play this game along with others games in the likes of MGS4 etc. (rumour about the 360 version of UTIII on the way without ability to customise game with own maps etc. put me off with the 360 version - is this true?) and I am interested in trying to make my own levels.

Is there anyone in this forum that actually created a map for UTIII and can anyone tell me how easy it is for me to do it?

Cheers

Youll need a copy of the PC version if you dont already own it as you cant create mods on the PS3. If you buy the Special Edition it comes with 20+ hours of tutorials from 3D Buzz so you can get to know the engine.

Levels arent really too hard to build, I had to build a level for Unreal Tourney 2004 for Uni and, although pretty basic, it was pretty easy to make. The levels are pretty similarly made in UT3 and simple maps can be made easily while the more complex and large maps may take a while to get your head around making.

As for the Xbox 360 version of the game, Epic do keep saying that they are trying to get a way of including user created content to be allowed, but until the game is ready to ship, we wont know whether you can create your own content for it or not.

Me and a friend from Uni are actually getting together tomorrow to start work on our first UT3 map to enter into a contest that 3D Buzz are running and after that were going to be moving onto a total conversion for the Make Something Unreal contest with a few more Uni friends.

Wow! I hope all goes well in the competitions mate.

I dont see the point in buying the 360 version if mods aint allowed on it. I reckon this will be a blow for Microsoft and a big plus for Sony if nothing is done about it. I intend to get the PS3 not just for Unreal Tournament 3 and custom mods, but I see that the PS3 is getting better than the first year. I cannot wait to MGS4 either now but have to wait until after the hols in late july. Oh well.

Youll have to show us the maps you do when you get into it.

I have seen some amazing mods and maps so far - Super Mario map in 2D with help from a 2D mod, the faithful recreation of the Courtyard from the Matrix Reloaded, a reproduction of Quake IIIs Longest Yard map, a Lego map and more. Also, there are really good ones so you should check out the UTIIIs official forum and check the final release mods there.

Heres a link to a YouTube video to see a final version of the original Doom map in the 90s Episode 1 mission 1. Looks great!
