Sam

Now do I make a usb pen bootable so I can install windows xp from the pen.
It is a usb 2 pen. I have found instructions on the web but it seems really complicated can anyone help.

knighty

do you have the usb pen drive verstion of xp ?

(not that ive ever done it before... but i do have that version of xp...)

bear

Here are good instructions: http://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htm Method 4.2

or  Method 5 seems the easiest.

Sam

But I need to boot so I can run windows xp setup. Doesnt it have to be setup in its own way or can I run xp setup from any dos prompt ?

Sam

Does anyone have format from win98?

knighty

do you want too boot up from the mem stick or run it from the mem stick ?  or both ?

guessing its a laptop with no cd-drive or something like that and you want to re-install xp ?

Sam

its a laptop with a f**ked cd rom that I need to install xp on, so yes youre just about right knighty.

knighty

cant you just copy all of the files from the cd onto your usb stick and then boot from that ?

in win98 you could boot into dos and then run the win98setup, but you cant do that with xp, it needs to boot from the cd files to make all kinds of ram disks etc...

edit/ps.  Im off to bed now, but just thought i should say, you shouldnt have to bother with the "make this a bootable cd" stuff when you format it, just a normal format and copy the files onto it.....  I used to do this so i could boot from an old HD for uber quick installs.... or using a dvd instead of a cd for xp so i could keep other handy programs on there too !

Serious

There is a way to install XP onto an eee pc so it should be possible to do it.

bootdisk.com has that as ISO

I think you can start the XP setup from DOS prompt.

You read this as well http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/archive/usb-boot.mspx.

it was a long time ago that i tried... but i could never get xp to boot from the command prompt....

but copying all the files from the xpcd onto a usb pen drive worket for me last night.... how old is the laptop sam ? are you sure it can boot from usb ? have you triend removing all other boot options in the bios and then seeing whatr happens ?  (what kind of error you get) ?

Eggtastico

when you finally get it started, when Windows formats teh Drive & Creates a partition & then copies all the files & then reboots
Create a Ghost copy from here.. Then you can just "ghost" to any drive & the initial copying & fdisking, etc. is already done for you
& windows will just install.
