The Deep

Anyone watching this?

Bit slow...potentially obvious plot but can only hope they throw some twists in or something...

...was the wife genetically engineering some new biofuel bacteria or something (the research), or is that what theyre after down there?

Im hoping beyond hope that theres some kind of sea monster...they keep hinting at it what with the "Im being swallowed up" and "WWII wrecks have been in better condition than this...", but sods law itll be some kind of corrosive microbe which can be utilised as a fuel source which is doing it.

Itd kick ass if they found Ryleh at the bottom of the trench but thats not going to happen ><

Wasnt really impressed with the first episode to be honest but my better half has been watching it and is enjoying it.

It just feels cheap and nasty to me. A lot of the acting comes across as really sub-par and half the time the actors dont seem to know what they should be doing, something I imagine is down to bad direction. It all comes across as a bit daft and I cant take it seriously, quite like the new Doctor Who or that recent modern remake of Sherlock Holmes. They all "feel" very similar to me, quite mediocre and full of characters pulling silly facial expressions when they do things.

It did set me off on a bit of a theme though, I had the urge to watch The Abyss for the eleventieth time, such an incredible film. I also found time to watch Sphere, despite a few flaws its quite an enjoyable adaptation of the novel.

Funny that, I had the opposite impression of both the cast (who are individually pretty good actors on merit, Driver, Nesbitt, Cusack, etc) and the sets. I guess maybe there is a bit of ham from the lesser roles. None of it seems cheap and nasty to me though, it all looks pretty polished, but it is definitely far too slow moving. I started watching from episode 2 after missing the first and it was easy enough to catch up and realise what was going on, which seems to suggest to me another case of dumbing it down for people or stretching it out way too much, you decide which. I reckon it would have made a much better 2/3 part feature with it condensed down.

All of the underwater scenes reminded me instantly of The Abyss though.

Who/Sherlock would feel similar due to the writers being the same?! Sherlock was alright I found, I never read the originals or saw the older TV series, but it was watchable. I also prefer the new doctor to Tennant 0.o

The Deep is really really flawed when you think about it, but hey, its an hour a week where you can sit back and not really think about much. The second you do you realise how stupid the whole thing is :D

I found myself getting very annoyed at the plot last night while watching it, especially regarding the Nesbitt character - ignoring the fact that he really shouldnt be on the mission in the first place! ...seeing it is so close to where his wife died! would anybody in their right mind let him go on a vital mission to the sub that she was a member of the crew?
Also why was there no mention or check to see if there was a breathable atmosphere on the lost sub? ...Surely seeing the cabin wasnt flooded it isnt too much of a leap to wonder if the crew had exhausted the oxygen supply before they died?  ...it does feel paper thin and written in a hurry to me tbh

I did really enjoy the new Sherlock, just a shame they only did 3 episodes in this series :)

From the looks of the "next episode" thing, it looks exactly the opposite of what anyone in their situation would do.

If it were me, based on the current 3 eps...now that the immediate threat is over and they have a means of returning to the surface...first return to the hermes, see what happened, and then get the hell out of there. No doubt some plot device will be used to ensure they dont follow common sense.
