Sky or Virgin
on: April 02, 2009, 21:48:21 PM
Im moving out in a few months and Ive been looking at the available packages for both Sky and Virgin. Now obviously Sky is a tad more expensive but they offer Sky Sports HD, something Virgin dont. However, Virgin can offer me 50mb in the area that Im moving to. I have friends who have been with Virgin and experienced a few problems with them especially their poor customer support. Im slightly favouring Sky despite the fact its £65 for Sky HD with Sky Sports pack, Full broadband and line rental a month compared to Virgin which is just under £50.

Virgin Customer Support is horrible but at the same time there connection has been sold at my house for nearly a year, only had one problem with a Direct Debit problem with them. Im planning on upgrading the package soon to get TV, but the internet is good.

Been on sky for most of a year now, no real problems. Several places have £29.99 offers for HD so worth checking or get a friend to introduce you. Dont know which would be cheaper.

if you want HD then sky is your only choice.
If you want 50mb bb then Virgin atm is your only choice.

You can have broadband only with virgin if you want... then pick up a eurovox/dreambox/or the other 5 or 6 dodgy cable boxes.

Skys broadband is up to 24Mb depending on distance, line quality etc.  Plus they dont throttle as I understand it.  Virgin even publish the fact they throttle!

Not throttled on Sky here, and I download a massive amount.

Download speed is crappy, but that may be due to old phone lines etc.

*edit - Ring Virgin and say you are thinking of getting Sky becuase of HD, then see what they offer. Then ring Sky and say you are thinking of getting Virgin becuase its cheaper. Youll get a deal out of one of them. :)

Its a toughy but Im not that bothered about the broadband speed. Im currently with O2 at home and as I have an O2 contract its only costing me £8 for 4mb (I cant get more than 5mb). The thing is on Quidco theyre offering £120 for new Sky HD customers so thats very tempting. I may end up getting my phone line and TV with Sky and just transfer my broadband with O2 over. The free broadband offer from Sky is a bit pants to be honest.
