Who do you guys use? I have recently been using Voipbuster and Voipstunt as they do that free call thing.
Anyone use other packages? and what hardware do you run.
I am only interested in SIP compatible software not proprietry stuff like Skype.

I run xfire on my lappy at home, in combination with the voipuser package mainly because its free providing you have your mates call you enough :D
want a cheap sip phone at some point though, so im looking at the grandstream budgetone models at about Ã,£45 for a phone its still expensive. :(

I just got a Grandstream Budgetone 102 (the one with the network passthrough), not got it yet butwill plumb it in when it arrives. I hear that the Thomson Speedtouch 2020 is quite good too.
I have high hopes for the new handset and would like it to go with the best provider.

Well Ive no idea if its the best provider, but voipuser allows me to run a softphone fine without any issues, and comes with free email voicemail too. :)
One thing that may stop you going with voip user is that you can only call mobiles depending on routing. In general its not possible for mobile phones to be contacted using voipuser, but in rare circumstances apparantly some phones can be dialed.
Which is why you may want to consider using another voip provider :)
How much did your 102 cost? Id be looking for the same model unless I went and bought a hub/switch too.
So many now, I am way behind using Google Talk and Skype, skype have better sound of those two, no problem
calling a phone in china :)
Ekiga (http://www.ekiga.org/) (only for linux atm) is pretty good, supports both SIP and H.323. :)

I got mine off ebay. The passthrough is only 10mbps so that might be a tad slow tbh, but for me its fine as I have a switch. It also has call ID
Voipstunt have "free" calls to USA mobiles as well as landlines. I can call home and the rellys for nowt, which is fine by me as the missus spends about an hour a day chatting to her folks and I make a fair few calls within France.
The voicemail feature is a great thing, however I would find it more useful having call forwarding but that you can do from the phone. Anyway, each package has its advantages and disadvantages, just need to know what is best for my use and at a minimum of cost!

Micromart did a "test" of a load of VOIP providers, Ill try and copy the info into this thread at some point. They were heavily biased towards skype crap though.
Skype is great if you want "pretend" voip. but I want proper voip :D

I think consumer voip is moving on, and skype releasing a sip variant would be one of the best moves they could make. Using your current account and features but on a deskphone, not attached to a PC.
Still, them not conforming is certainly making it harder for them.... well in the future. Or at least I reckon it will.
I tell you what would be a superb product.... something like Trillian but for VOIP products. Bringing together several accounts allowing you to choose which to use to dial where. Or just have it programmed into the software who offers the best rate and automatically choose it. Anyhoo, nice idea and hope itll be out in the near future.

Asterisk@home can do the above by the way :) Chooses providers on the cheapest routing for a particular phonecall :) think it also does provider failover, so if one server goes down, it uses another provider to route the call.
And Xfire can have multiple accounts, and multiple lines :) Quite a nice bit of softphone software :)
Save your cash for a bit, and get a 7900 series IP phone - youll be glad you did.
If you need any, I can do them for Ã,£85 ea pre flashed with SIP 7.4 or 8.2 - whatever you like.
^^^
is that one that plugs both into your land line and your router ?
I was just about to make another thread asking for recomendations for something like that !
7940 is a proprietary IP phone - plug one end into your network, and it also has a 10/100 switch port in the back to loop through to your pc etc.
hmm, any recomendations for one that can take a lan line and a phone line ?
would make things much easier for work !
or any easy way to do it ?

Sipura 3000 ata has auto failover to landline if the VOIP side of things fails, or power dies.
I was after one that will make the calls via the lan line, and receve calls via the normal line ?
guess I could just use 2 phones :)
tho then again... isnt there problems asociated with using a fax machine on a line that your running a DSL connection over ?

I believe the sipura will do that.
and no no problems running a fax. :) Hell my dad still dials up RAS into his workplace over the homes dsl line.
just realised... I could stick with the standerd phone for incomming calls, and use the phone on the fax machine for the incomming calls ;)
Ill sort out a BB line at work then order one :)
so whos the best VOIP provider for a line that Ill only iuse for outgoing calls ?
why only for outgoing calls though? you can get the number ported - DDIS from bt cost about 3 quid a month
hmmm....
thing is for work I need it to be perfect for the incomming calls.... if i have any problems with the outgoing i can always unplug it :)
tbh what I save on calls could be lost again by losing just 1 good customer
maybe i could add it for the incomming calls at a later date :(
If you get a proper voip system there wont be any issues with it.
We have no analogue lines whatsoever coming into the business - all are ISDN 30s straight from the BT datacentre and from NTLs datacentre.
Our uptime for last year on voice was 100%
