Webhosting...
on: July 27, 2021, 09:20:46 AM
I've been out of the hosting game for decades. Literally. It was probably 20 years ago I registered a domain and paid for a cheap shared hosting package on Hostgator, and I've been paying for it ever since.

Over time the fee has gone up, and I'd say performance has gone down as the servers get loaded up. My website is quite a clunky affair, I'm sure there's plenty of redundant sql databases, my original email address gets hundreds of spam emails a day etc. I paid to go onto a cloud option, which improved speed, but not really the resource issues.

I currently am in a situation where I can't really upload anything as I think the server is at the end of its tether with resources.

So I find myself at a crossroads. My website isn't too bad, but really it's niche and doesn't generate much traffic. I pretty much just use it to show people photos when we're talking about things. I'm tempted to axe it and just renew my flickr pro subscription, which would be cheaper...BUT...I still want to retain my domain and email addresses.

So I guess...the question is, what do you guys recommend? Are there hosting packages out there that cater to just email addresses (but don't have titchy amounts of space) that don't cost the same as a half-decent cloud hosting option?

if there's naff all traffic what's your net connection like at home?

get a little web hosting box and run it from home... just pay for the domain etc.

There are free hosting providers out there though they are mostly crap, but take a look at Infinity Free as they might suit your low traffic usage.

I hadn't considered using our home connection.

For all the talk of NZ being years behind the rest of the world, we went from basic fibre in the UK to 300mbps. Currently on 100mbps.

I don't really have the time to set up something though. Barely have the time to search for an online option (hence asking here).

Also, that was me above. Hadn't realised tapatalk had signed me in on some other rando account. Weird.
