ive got our works website to get up onto the internet and ive not cleared up in my head the best way to go about remotely changing data in the DB that drives it.
ive been looking to see how viable it would be to connect directly to the database and update it using my own desktop app rather than code up the website with numerous admin pages.
details from the hosts ive looked at havent exactly been forthcoming about any sort of details to connect to the DB or weither its frowned upon (suppose its another service to attack).
only ones ive seen it mentioned is dedicated SQL DB hosting and thats something above n beyond what i actually need, just need some tables to store text and parameters.
anyone else had experience of managing a website could shed some light on it would be great. :)
sounds like you need a linux host and a copy of mySQLAdmin which is installed by default on any cPanel hosting company.
This allows you to update the tables in the database with simple sql statements via a web browser.
I use nethosted and resell space to mates. theyve also got a cracking little hosting package at Ã,£30 the year which does most small businesses.

forgot to mention im running on ASP.NET 2 and SQL (either desktop engine or full blown SQL server)
if the story is the same, that most of the admin work is from web based control panels then i may have to get cracking on the admin sections for the users here :lol:
in that case youre looking for a windows host. no experience there, sorry.
